NNO Home RUn Challenge (x2)
NNO - National Base Card Day
should be removed, these items are just random promotional inserts with no known values.....

Several Topps sets that I have seen show these as part of the base set, which throws off the number of cards collected in the set, and in general, just adds confusion. (it will show me having 701 cards collected of a 700 card set, but 2 of those might be ad cards, so I am still a card short even though it shows me at over 100%). I agree we should keep them listed as promo cards on the insert page, but have them removed from base set checklists.

Just to clear up a couple things:
1 - Cards don't have to have any value here to be listed. If the card came in a pack, we're documenting it. Maybe 100 years from now, there will be people buying the "Topps Magazine" cards for more than the actual Canseco cards because 99.9% of them got tossed or destroyed. Right now, we think of them as junk. Many smokers from around 1910 probably thought "Why the heck is there a drawing of a base ball [sic] player in this pack?" So, we list the advertising insertions. We also have a place to document ad sheets. Just think of it as historical documentation.
2 - The cards listed as individual "inserts" or "promos" should not be counted in the totals for the set. If you are seeing this happening, please report the set through the "See an inaccuracy" link for that set - we may need to get Admin to look into that. That would be the same as counting the Babe Ruth puzzle pieces as part of the base set for the 1982 Donruss set. It doesn't count, nor should it. Same with the single-card inserts. They do, however, show up if you are going card by card in the base set, get to the end and continue on. They also show up in the Team and Name validation for the base set (simply because in "database land", they have no other set to be associated with). But they should not count in the totals. If you do see examples of that, let's get that to Admin ASAP. Thanks.

I usually throw away the promo cards that I get in packs. I always wonder though if someday I will regret it.

I'm still not sure what you're looking at. I went into my 2018 Topps when I do not list that I have any of the HR challenge or National Card Day cards, and it shows that I have 350 of 350 on my collection summary page for the set. From what you were describing, I was expecting to see 350 of 353. Not the case.

I'll put myself in the category of being confused here. The promo cards that appear under Inserts & Related sets are not included by the database when trying to calculate your base set "completeness". Where are you seeing that they are?

I might be following now where your confusion is coming from...
2018 Topps > Collection Summary shows I have 353 / 350 cards (100.9%). When I looks at my "Haves" I find that in addition to the 350 base cards, I have 118b (Ian Happ photo variation), 267b (Yoan Moncada photo variation) and NNO (Home Run Challenge).
On my "Don't Have" list I have 48 other variation cards and 2 more NNO (Home Run Challenge and National Baseball Card Day). But none of the variations or NNOs are required to "complete" the set.
Still not quite sure where you would be getting a calculation that shows you're short on a set that you do have complete though. If anything, TCDB over reports your percentage. If I had added the other two NNO cards but I was missing cards #1 and #2, TCDB would still happily tell me that I have 353 of 350 cards in the set.

I fully understand the confusion!!! When I first joined, I looked at my front page of a set that I was entering and it showed I had 697 of 700 so I assumed I needed 3 more cards, yet there were six NNO checklists and a couple of ad cards at the end that I was unaware of. I actually needed 11 cards but was not actively pursuing them all necause I wasn't fully aware of how that worked. I learned this after adding another set and had 662 out of 600 making me realize those cards were counting towards my set. I was not usng wantlist at the time because I had that written out on paper, but stored away. This was after finding this place after being away from serious collecting for almost 20 years. That is one of my pete peeves about the site that I do not care for. As a 34 year veteran Math Teacher, something is complete when it reaches 100%. I wish all other NNO cards were listed as a subset under inserts. And don't get me started on variations, but that is anentirely different argument. Rant over!!!!!
