I'm always trying to find new ways to display my cards, new ways to appreciate them, excuses for playing with them, frankly. Virtually all of my cards are in binders, accessible, but not on display. I have 23 cards in cases on stands on a bookshelf in the office. They were all hall of famers (plus Pete Rose), all players and cards I just liked. But I've started collecting some odd "sets" lately -- all the Frank Sullivan cards, because that's my best friend's name; all the (old) Frank Thomas cards, because I met him in Coopertown this year, and he was just a cool old man. So I was thinking of putting all or most of the hall of famers in their binders and putting out all the Frank Sullivans and Frank Thomases. Or maybe all the Lou Brock (my favorite player for years) cards from 1963 to 1979.
But then I thought, if I want to make the display cards "personal," I should make the display truly reflect that. So, making only a few substitutions, I decided to neatly label all the cards of players that had some meaning to me (no, I did not write on the cards...). So now nine of the displayed cards have explanations about why they matter. "All-Time Favorite Relief Pitcher" (Lee Smith); "Shares My Best Friend's Name" (Frank Sullivan); "Met Him in Coopertown - 2014" (Frank Thomas); "I Saw Him Naked - 1984" (Ron Santo); etc. And I love it.
Just sharin', though I suppose it could be the start of an actual thread if people wanted to chime in with their creative ideas for displaying/caring about their collections.
Happy collecting...
