I'm currently debating an offer from an eBay seller for a 1/1 of a football player I collect. He has a couple of good seasons in the NFL during a four-year career but hasn't played since 2013 due to several off-the-field incidents and suspensions. $20 is already steep for this card. I mean sure it's a One-of-One, but this guy has no real demand for his stuff. The major issue I have is that the seller (or someone else) had the player sign it. I assume the player actually signed it, I don't know.
For me, this actually makes me want it less because now, it has been altered and there is no other option for an unaltered version of this card. I already have a 1/1 printing plate of one of my basketball players that some nitwit had signed and it bugs the tar out of me every time I look at it.
I get that people out there who look at this hobby as a way to make money think that an auto is going to make something more desirable, but for crying out loud... that's what commons are good for! Don't alter something that is already unique or extremely rare already.
Sorry, just had to rant.

If it's going to bug you that it's signed, I see no reason to buy it. Especially being a player that sounds less than desirable. I realize you didn't really ask a question or for an opinion, but being a grumpy old man that's what I live for. My opinion would be an autographed 1/1 would be that much more special. If it was one of my favorite players, even better. But everybody is different, so you do you!

I am 100% with you. I don't even like IP autos on common cards unless I specifically get them auto'd. To me the IP auto really requires the "in person" part for it to mean anything. If I don't meet the person signing it at a card show or at the ballpark or at least see for myself, then it could be anyone scribbling on a card. There is no real meaning to it to me. I just don't get why people go to the trouble of getting someone's autograph just to sell it or trade it away.

Yep. If the card comes from the manufacturer signed, that's fine. But I really have no desire to buy autographed stuff that was done by someone else. I want to get my stuff autographed in person so it has some personal memory/attachment.
The only exception I have is if the person is deceased and they are an absolute favorite.

I hate when I see people getting 1/1s and rare cards signed. I mean, yes, it's yours, you can do what you want with it, but it's forever altered. A few months ago, someone listed a whole bunch of NASCAR cards on eBay. 1/1s, cards numbered to the driver's door number.... all signed in person. Such a shame.

Although it doesn’t alter the card, I think the same way about grading 1/1 cards. What’s the point? It’s already a pop 1.

The only IP autos I find annoying are when the cards already have a fascimile autograph on it.

Yeah having 1/1’s signed bugs me too, definitely decreases the desirability of that particular card
