Card Scanning Tips

I've got some cards in my collection that either don't have images on this site or the images that they do have are less than ideal (picture quality, gum stains, etc). If anyone has suggestions or can link me to tutorials on how to get good scans of cards, especially chrome or refractor cards, I would greatly appreciate it. I'd be using the scanner at my college library, which has served me well enough in the past.
