Honestly, just collect players you like unless you wanna feel that pack rush. Trust me though, singles bring more joy

If you want to get started in either sport, I would start out with a player that is not necessarily highly collected.  Maybe a good college player or two from different eras from your fave college team that didn't necessarily do that well in the pros.  That way you can get an idea of the sets and what they look like and whether you like them enough to really get invested without investing too much money in something you may not even take to.
