91 Topps Baseball was my first set. I worked in an Athletic Training room and Alex Fernandez went through our college before being drafted in 1990. So I had the brilliant idea to get some rookie cards of his to get autographed. I found a local store, was told 90 Classic was the only RC they had. Then a couple months later the 90 Fleer Update came out but I had to buy the whole set. I had never heard of Classic and a Fleer card that only came in a set didn't seem to mesh with what I remembered of ripping wax packs at 7-11 in the 80's. So While I bought those, I kept thinking I was missing something. When the 91 Topps arrived and I could buy a pack for $.49 and had the chance to get a Topps card of Alex Fernandez and it was off to the races. Wade Boggs, Cal Ripken and who is this kid Griffey? I bought an 800 count box and the set building had begun. Paper want lists taken to every local shop, wait what do you mean they messed up the picture? It's called an Error? Now I had to have one of each of those and the corrected version. During that time names like Upper Deck, Ultra, Premier, and Stadium Club were catching my eye but the biggest stack of doubles was 91 Topps. I got close to finishing the base and errors when I took a much needed break from cards around 95 or so. I had probably maxed out my first credit card and a couple gas cards picking up packs here and there. So I really needed to step away. The internet brought sties like Sports Card Fun to connect traders who still worked written and Word document want lists. I broke out 91 Topps and got a little closer. Dragging those Bankers Boxes full of 800 count and shoe boxes every time I moved. Thought I was over it when I sold a monster box to a local kid at a yard sale. Then I found TCDB, trade matching! Now I could finally trade for those last couple ERR/CORR versions I needed. As I went to enter my set, WTF! Print letter versions? Strong printed backs? My 792 card set had gone to 813 then to 829 and now 1158! So while I thought I was close you guys showed me I have a long way to go!
So while looking at a match with Jasfor, the set that continues to elude me, the over produced, top of the 90's set we call 91' Topps then throws yet another curve at me!
Glow backs!
it never ends! Who the heck put these under a UV light and threw my set into chaos! Why do I now have the urge to start a glow back set! I can't wait till someone finds out there was a specific paper pulp mix used in the last week of production that is now in the mix!
