I am presently still working on entering my collection and I have thousands of duplicates. They are great for trading and that is a lot of the fun on this site but I will be surpassing 15,000 duplicates in the near future. Many due to a couple of large collections I purchased with some heavy duplication. I wanted to hear a little discussion on what members here do with thri duplicates. Do you keep them all in a stack of 5000 count boxes and hope to some day trade them? Do you sell them off? If you sell do you break them into smaller lots or do bulk. A lot of what I recently acquired in duplicates were bought locally in bulk and weren't too terribly expensive. My plan right now is to hang onto them until I complete logging stuff, then I am going to trade what I can here for a short while (ex: I will reach out to all members needing 2011 score football to see if they want to buy/trade), then after that short while I think I will just box them up in lots of 3,000-5,000 cards and sell locally for whatever I can get to move them on to the next collector. I feel I would rather try to clean out the huge quantity of dupes eventually. I was just curious what most members here try to do with theirs.

I only track one of each card in my collection here on the database. I don't list any of my duplicates. I have a 3200 count box for my 2 year old son. I put any 2nd copies of cards I have in the box for him in case he also wants to collect cards when he is older he can have a nice starter box. I have any 3rd copies + of cards just stacked in a shoebox for trading or giving away.
I don't have nearly as many as I used to though. I gave a lot away to Goodwill before I joined this site.

My answer would draw a lot of outrage from some other members, so I won't answer.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

No outrage here. I understand and you do what you gotta do.

I started years ago doing it alphabetical in 5000 count boxes and entered them all in an axcess file on my laptop. I can sort them however I want in the program, if I'm looking by names or sets, and then I can just pull what cards I need out of the monster boxes. The last couple of years I've bought some big set lots from the late 70's to mid 80's so I have been storing those duplicates by set. I only have my baseball collection organized this way but haven't started putting them on the site yet. I have my football sets and set fillers entered in the database but haven't gone through about 25,000 football singles yet.

It took me about 5 years to do it all. But I have over 60,000 duplicates up for trade on here. I keep them sorted by year-set-number in 5000 count boxes. I do only keep 3000 cards per box though, because some cards like Topps Heritage only allow you to put 600 cards per row.

The more comments I read the more I am thinking about just boxing them and keeping them for trading. I have a large house and the kids are graduating and maybe? moving out soon so space shouldn't be an issue in the near future. So do most of you store your duplicates separate from the cards you want to keep? At present I have all that I have sorted by year and brand and in numbered order but the copy I want to keep is in with the doubles. I suspect at some point it makes sense to pull my keepers out and have boxes of just dupes for trade in case I do reach the point some day that I want to do a massive purge of my doubles that they are ready to go.

I keep one of everything in binders and single set boxes. All my extra “doubles” I keep in 3200 and 5000 count boxes and trying to add them all to trade. So I can get what I don’t have and help others get cards they need.
