My crossroads are a bit different. Collecting took a decided turn in the 1990s when the market got flooded with sets. Up until then I would collect or HC each set from each major release. I also probably have some sets and partials from @ '93-'99 [some aren't even sorted yet], very few 2000s up. Archives and Heritage I started to back-collect.
So, I then have a similar problem : In baseball, I will probably go Team A's sets, that way I can at least get a sample card from each set. In football, likewise but Team Eagles and Peyton Manning. In hockey and basketball, going to collect either HOFers, RC or both [undecided] but selling/trading the rest. I will keep a few Fave sets.Misc sports [exRacing] going with Hometown Heroes collections. Anything else dealing with sports is hit or miss. Non-Sports, anything "that floats my boat at the time", ex. Santa Collection, which led me to Coca-Cola Cards. Last year it was Wacky Packs and Fleer Labels etc.
Finally having room is not an issue, but getting more of what you like requires shorting marginal stuff. Vintage, ERRS/VARS/CORS, Oddballs and Stickers I'm always on the lookout for to start or supplement what I already have. That's the plan.
Take care, off to work on....hmmmm, think organizing today. ~BOB~
