 Does a super duper complete master set of 1990 Donruss product count?

My collecting goal is to to get the majority of the Detroit Tigers cards (mainly licened products) from 1956 to present. Would like to give it to my grandson who will hopefully keep it up when he is of age to collect (and pay) for cards.  Not doing to badly have many  cards from 1970 -1995, plus cards from the 60's and from 2007- 2014. Probably impossible to do because of both expense of the auto and relic cards and large number of parallel sets.  Seems like a waste to me to have all these parallels sets. One was plenty - i.e Topps Tiffany or Fleer Glossy. Just a $ making scheme by  card manufacturers.

I agree, but the bad thing is we're dumb enough to fall for it  I can see the board room of some card company now: "Let's put out a set of cards to get their money, then lets put out exactly the same set of cards but with a different colored border to get more of their money. It's no extra work for us but we make double the money."  I collect Chicago Cubs cards, but I'm like you in that I don't bother with the parallels.  If I happen to see them at a card show or something and they're cheap I'll buy them, but I don't go out of my way to get them.

This is exactly why I've limited myself to Topps basic set cards.  Not that Topps is so wonderful or anything, but they're good enough, and it's  a limited, albeit impossible to complete, universe. I'd drive myself crazy if I went after the parallels and the Tradeds and Fleer and Bowman, etc.  Topps basic sets are plenty.

I did recently decide it was ok to buy other brands from prior to 1951, since Topps didn't exist.  

But, back to my dumb goal of getting all the (old) Frank Thomas (Topps) cards....

What's funny is when the more recent Frank Thomas was called up I thought to myself; "I hope people don't confuse him with the slugging Frank Thomas of the 50's."  Who knew the "new" Frank Thomas would do better than the old Frank Thomas?  It's sort of like when the Brewers brought up a pitcher about 15 years ago named Bob Gibson.  I remember thinking to myself that he should have changed his name or something.
