People see misplaced value in everything. when Canada eliminated the penny from circulation, everyone and their dog began hoarding them. "They'll be worth something someday!!" I had a dealer tell me not to because it was going to depreciate the value of certain coins. I personally just hoarded from 1964 down... he he. ain't gonna se many of THOSE in idiots get rich quick hoards!

@CaptainKirk What's funny is that I'm actually considering covering a wall with my Pro Set extras, hahaha. It'll really class up the joint.

I completely agree with switzr1's post about the years/brands included. Value is in the (mind's) eye of beholder, just like your Pro Set cards. Quantity at a low price i easy for those kind of sets. It's only junk if you think it is. I've taught my girl about parallels and inserts and serial numbering.....she's confused about some of it, but she's learning!
Hockey junk in my opinion was mainly 90-95, with a few small exceptions.

Amen. But it's
still fun to get
all that garbage. switzr1 wrote: For my money, 1988-1993 pretty well covers it. There are exceptions like 1989 Upper Deck and 1990 Leaf baseball, and the first Hoops basketball set. I felt 1988 Donruss was the first truly garbage set of the overproduced era. It was the era where people who weren't collectors started buying cards, hoping they would be valuable. They heard about the Donruss Mattingly and other big cards from the mid 80s, and suddenly cards were investments. The Billy Ripken error didn't help. I remember a guy here who was going to put his grand kids through college with those. The leagues saw dollar signs and started granting licenses to anyone with a printing press, and suddenly the market was flooded. Or at least this is how I remember it, being a teenager at the time.

Oh, there's a clock
in my head and
despite what it
said, another one
on the wall. They
don't agree at
all...

Yep. I bought a wax box of 1992 Wild Card WLAF this week for $4 to see what number stripes I might get. I never said I haven't bought tons of the junk. But I sure wouldn't recommend buying much of it to a newcomer who isn't nostalgic for that era and it's players and cards. HowlingFury wrote: Amen. But it's

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

amen to the 'collect what you like' angle, regardless of book value
this hobby is best enjoyed for just the fun, and not for selling...

The way the card market is these days, you can't do anything but collect the fun stuff - there is really no way to make money on cards anymore.
