What keeps me out of Champs in Huntsville, for anything but supplies, is just that the singles are so disorganized.

Amen to that. When
my health improves
and we get out of
the debt hole, I'm
actually going to
try to open one. A
brick and mortar
with easy web
access specializing
in EVERYTHING. I
know, it's a dream,
but it's time. My
wife is actually
down with it, just
as long as we get
rid of our existing
debt. If I hadn't
been ill for so
long AND made a big
financial blunder
recently, we
could've gotten a
big enough loan to
get started, but
now our credit is
shot.
Sorry, is that all
too talky? lol. ThemightyOx wrote: We need more mom and pops in card stores and all other kinds of retail too.. and less chains.

Oh, there's a clock
in my head and
despite what it
said, another one
on the wall. They
don't agree at
all...

Billy's LCS is mine as well, but I had some bad experiences in there and even my son didn't want to go back. Fortunately, I work in northern NJ, and there are still a few LCSs around. Best one upthere that I found was The Baseball Card Store in Midland Park.
However, at the beginning of this year, my best friend from high school (and that was a long time ago, high school, that is) opened a card shop in southern NJ. Right near exit 4 of the Turnpike. Swamilee's. His name is Lee, and he is the Swami (goes back to his days when he wrote and produced a magazine called S.L.A.M. (Starting Lineup Authority Magazine)).
Thanks to him opening his shop, I get all my stuff through him now. I just have to drive a ways. But, he will get to know his customers. This is his 5th or 6th shop in the last 20+ years. He has "customers" from his first store that he still is friends with. Worth your time and effort to go see him if you live anywhere nearby. Tell him I sent you.

I need to look for a good sports card store in my area. I do most of my shopping online or at the occasional stop at a flea market. Many flea market sellers only deal with hockey, and often over-charge (especially when it comes to Leafs cards). If anybody knows of any good places near me with reasonable prices (Durham Region / east of Toronto, Ontario), I'd appreciate it.

vrooomed, I know exactly where this is. It's about an hour from me. I'll have to give it a look when I get a chance.

daclyde - I do admit if you want to search through their singles you have to be ready to spend quite a while there. Even the boxes sorted by year and brand aren't sorted by card number, so you have to look through all of them Even though it's not very well organized, it's still fun to just peruse the cards.
BTW, if you ever get out to Stars games you may want to get there sometime in the next month or so. They supposedly just got in their 2014 sets of trading cards, and as we Huntsvillians know, this is the last ever set of Huntsville Stars cards.
Also, for anyone in the Pensacola, FL area be sure to visit M&M Sports Cards and Collectibles. I went there this past weekend and picked up quite a few cards. He's got a nice selection of stuff, and it's all reasonably priced - which can't be said for some stores.

I was on vacation last week and noticed a shop in northwestern ohio, and decided to stop. All I saw was Magic type gaming cards, and lots of people playing the games at tables. I asked the man in charge if they had any sports cards, and he said his partner took the whole lot of them to the National. So much for me trying to go to a shop. (There are none in my area)
On a happier note, the National Park Service produces cards and gives them out free at many of their historic sites, with small sets exclusive to each park. I picked up four different sets on my trip. The guy at Gettysburg wasn't cooperative though and said "kids only"! I will get these scanned onto the site soon, if they aren't already here. Unexpected surprise for sure!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
