deporcoruña, to say
that baseball isn't
a sport just
because a player is
large and doesn't
have a six pack is
crazy! Have you
ever heard of Babe
Ruth? He is one of
the best athletes
and baseball
players of All-Time
and he wasn't
exactly built like
a greek God. If you
want to question
NASCAR and golf as
being a sport, I am
right there with ya.

carthage44, I do believe it is a sport. It's that sometimes I wonder because so many baseball players don't take care of themselves and still can have long careers. Dave Parker used to smoke. Jim Leyland smoked in the dugout as a manager of the Pirates, and didn't care about the seond hand smoke thing. As for Babe Ruth, he was just as famous for going out all night and having a good time as he was for hitting homeruns. If athletes did the same thing in basketball, hockey, football, soccer, rugby, ect., it wouldn't be long before you would notice a dramatic drop off in production. I guess what I'm trying to say is that baseball has more to do with having the talent to play it than the athleticism. Where other sports are the other way around. Racecar drivers need to be some what athletic. They do loose alot of wieght during a race, but I kind of agree with you there. (It's more stunt man than athlete.) As for golf, I totally agree with you. I've gone out golfing and come home three sheets to the wind. I can't do that in any other sport I've played.

David Well, CC Sabathia, Cecil Fielder, etc.....they all weren't in peak physical condition, but did their jobs extremely well. Golf takes a lot more physical strength than they're given credit for. Not to mention that Villanueva was a catcher, and usually catchers are bigger guys (I was one), not known for athleticism, but leadership abilities.

Hey no hard
feelings here
everyone is
entitled to their
opinion and I
played baseball for
a long time and you
have to be athletic
to play the sport
not to mention have
great stamina to
play every single
day. Just because a
player is large
doesn't me he isn't
athletic and if you
are a MLB baseball
player and you
might be tipping
the scales, I
guarantee that the
player is very
athletic. And if a
guy can go out and
drink some beers
and party and still
perform at the top
level, more power
to him. That just
goes to show they
are more of an
athlete than most.
LOL!

I don't know if I'd
call them athletes,
but I would call
them highly skilled
drivers using
highly specialized
equipment. I can't
stand long trips in
automobiles at
70mph, so hats off
to them for sitting
much longer and
going much faster. Billy Kingsley wrote: Anyone who says
auto racers are not

even watched a

it and still hold
those views. |

Actually they could
still produce them,
the just can't use
MLB logos and team
names. Last I
heard, they'd
signed a deal with
the player's
association to
produce cards of
retired players.
I believe Panini is
doing a great job
with their baseball
products that are
only licensed by
the MLBPA
(excluding their
Donruss attempts.
Just horrid.)
They're out
chroming Topps with
their Prizm
products. ThemightyOx wrote: UpperDeck still exists. They just cant produce baseball cards because Topps has the exclusive license. THey still produce cards for the NHL

Ive always thought this is one of the reasons baseball is special. You dont need to be an above average height.. You dont need to weigh so much above your normal body weight that your knees get destroyed. 5'5" Jose Altuve can be an all-star, 6'10" Randy Johnson can be an all-star. 41 year old 250+lb Bartolo Colon can be one of his team's better pitchers
As for Hector Villanueva. He was a catcher. In an average 9 inning game a catcher squats 175 times. They throw a ball well over 200 times. They still have to hit, block balls in the dirt, chase after fouls, back up first base, call the game etc
Yes they are athletes.. even the heavy ones.

Great points. I
think most people
know the old saying
about not just
anyone can go up to
the plate and
actually hit a 90-
100mph baseball.
Well, anyone can
get in a car, drive
fast and avoid
other cars, at
least for a while.
Take soccer, those
guys are some of
the most physically
fit athletic
specimens around,
but even Villanueva
would at least have
some success on the
pitch. Besides
that, soccer sucks.
It's fine to like
auto racing, but I
don't think it's an
athletic endeavor.
Formula 1 drivers
might be closer to
athletes.
How about poker and
horse shoes? ThemightyOx wrote: Ive always thought this is one of the reasons baseball is special. You dont need to be an above average height..
