Hey Todd and welcome to the site! I've been here for about a year and have learned a lot about what I didn't know about trading when I was a kid. The first lesson? Anything from about 1980-1995 is worth much much less than you would expect...much less. Anything outside those years are valued less as well, but not as much as the "junk wax era". It is fun, however, to trade those cards for others to build your personal collection. The second lesson? Don't rely too much on the pricing listed under the card. It's probably a decent place to start, but don't take it too literally. If you're looking for a better market value, search the card on eBay and look under "Sold Items". That might give you a better measure. And like my dad said 30 years ago, "They aren't worth anything until someone buys them from you." Last and for sure most importantly, enjoy the hobby. I had a huge collection of cards that has had fresh breath blown back into it, and it's been a lot of fun trading with others who share the same affinity as me.
This might not be the best answer or the answer that you were hoping for, but plug into the website and enjoy. If you're ever looking for a trade, hit me up.
