Year: 1990

Set: Target Dodgers (Rate)

Card: #118 Hugh Casey

“ The design on this set sucks, which is a shame because these older players deserve some new-era cards. It's way too plain and the design on the borders is really boring. The back is just as boring. The Target logo shouldn't be bigger than the Dodgers logo lol. ” -pugchump

“ Nice commemorative retro store brand set. I have seen a blogger or two mention this set. Wow quite a big set at over 1,000 cards. It was pretty much a "anyone who ever played for the Dodgers" kind of set. ” -captkirk42

Simple and basic. A good card from that era.

It's basic but it's one of the most comprehensive sets ever produced, nearly 1100 cards. (Almost) every Dodger that played over 100 years. I love minutae and nostalgia and I wish more teams had a set like this.

Dead at 37?  Too young.  The Wiki fills in 'the rest of the story':

On July 3, 1951, Casey died in Atlanta from a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the neck while his estranged wife was pleading with him on the phone. Casey was upset that he had recently been named in a paternity suit by another woman as the father of her child.

Loving the Dodgers and having Dodger Town, Florida (Vero Beach) as my Home Town, this was a MUST Set to Own, which I do own!  It is a Set with LOTS of cards in it as well.  Nice to  see it featured!!

This set is actually a series of stadium giveaway sheets. Packets of 15-card sheets were distributed over six dates of the 1990 Dodger baseball season for a total of 73 sheets. They were not distributed/sold at Target stores.
