Year: 2002

Set: Topps - Ring of Honor (Rate)

Card: #JM19 Joe Montana

“ For an insert, this works very well. If my calculations are correct it will come up as Card of the Day on the 32nd anniversary of the game it commemorates. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ This guy is really a legend. Even in cold Finland in 80s and early 90s where american football was unknown territory and it couldn't be seen anywhere, kids knew Joe Montana name basis and some got even 49ers shirts and caps. And I can safely say that he was only american football player that anyone could name. Ahh... those were the days when american cultural invasion really took off... ” -Duke

“ Normally one is trying to throw the ball into the hole not out of it. ” -Sportzcommish

“ Damn he was good! ” -carthage44

“ Loved when Montana played for the 49ers. Bets that Jerry Rice was on the other side of the throw. ” -Kirokyukan

“ Nice action shot! I have always liked cards that commemorate a single game. Classic card! Classic player! ” -jayoneill

“ I thought these cards were nice, and appreciated that they continued for a few years with the latest SB MVPs. Subtle difference also that the back pic is not just a recropped version of the front pic, but two different shots. Joe still gets my vote for GOAT, even though I know the conversation has debate. ” -Brimose

“ Great photo for the design. I like the look of this card. ” -rmpaq5

“ To showcase legendary players, I would have expected a much nicer looking card. Nothing special about it. ” -dilemma19

“ I actually really like this insert card. I have a soft spot for all things Super Bowl. I loved when Pro Set had the Super Bowl tribute set and the MVP inserts. This looks way nicer. The back is cool, the coloring is awesome. The name could be a little better, but I think it is a two thumbs up! ” -muskie027

“ I sort of like these Ring of Honor cards now. When I first saw them I hated them. Nice looking design, but I hated it at first because it is in ugly colors. Another question about these cards is WHICH Ring of Honor? The Hall of Fame, which I think it is, or the Team's Ring of Honor in their stadium? Or some made up based on fans reactions to certain superstars? ” -captkirk42

I do enjoy this set. I was confused at first by the checklist, since it goes by the numbering Topps used with the player's initials. When I saw the first two cards as Bart Starr (BS1, BS1) I had expected the third card to be from Super Bowl III but nope, Chuck Howley from Super Bowl V. I guess that's what happens when Topps puts letters in the card number.
