Random Card of the Day

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

Year: 1989

Set: Score (Rate)

Card: #607 Jim Eppard

“ Like many cards from the late 80s "Junk years" there was a time when I was sick and tired of this set. Well those days are over and I like maybe even love this set again. Just like about 90% of the other sets I need to build I still need a ton of these "JUNK" cards. As I like to say about junk era cards (and about any cards in general) DON'T THROW THEM AWAY, at the very least RECYCLE THEM, or better yet give them to me no strings/commitments. ” -captkirk42

“ How did Score manage to write a legitimately informative paragraph or two on each player, display full career stats and a photo on the back? Admittedly their photography wasn't fantastic, and the designs (though uncluttered) were pretty bland, but it's a pity that this brand couldn't survive. Who's Jim Eppard by the way?!? ” -dilemma19

“ Great scan...solid card design. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Solid effort. Much better than the debut Score set from the previous year. ” -vrooomed

“ You've got to give Score credit for trying. ” -NJDevils

“ I think I could have been in the Majors in the 80's. Jim Eppard??? ” -carthage44

“ I threw a factory set of these cards out into the street with the magic motion inserts included--worthless. ” -RoundtheDiamond87

“ Now this is a random card! I LOVE seeing these cards pop up, as it reminds me so much of the time when collecting was so fun. It still is, but this "junk" era will always have a special place in my heart. ” -RoyalChief

No true collector considers any card "junk". That term drives me crazy. Whenever I see it it's like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

I agree whole-heartedly.  How can you call it junk (over-produced) and then say you are still seeking out cards from this era in the same paragraph, which I see often.  How does the idea that there is less production now (and probably a lot less collectors) than during those years make the cards of today any less junk by that defintion?  I noticed that at the card show I went to a couple weeks ago, there were a lot of these serial numbered, jersey, autographed, and low print cards of minor and common/unproven players that dealers were happy to take deep discounts on.  Does that mean they are junk?

I have never been a big fan of Score cards but there is a certain simple quality to these cards with a decent amount of information and stats as has been mentioned.

It's ok I guess, some cards from the set look better than others, depending on the colors used.

Love the stats and info on the back. I find it fascinating that the 80s, in general, were all about flash and glitz, but the baseball cards had this serene simplicity.
