Set: Ultra (Rate)

Card: #636 Nolan Ryan

“ Love the early Ultra designs. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ This one looks better than the Bleachers Tri-Star St. Louis Midwest Collectors Convention card of him in the Tux and the terrible Bleachers hat! ” -switzr1

“ Nice front, ok back, and Nolan Ryan...class act, what a thrower! ” -Kaline6

“ A picture from practice. Good action, though. Nice back--3 different pictures on the card. ” -cjjt

“ I love this set. The flaming baseball as part of the logo was a nice touch. Also I like the player photos of Nolan in this card. ” -duaned99

“ Like the front, even though it reeks of typical 1990s style. Back a bit plain. ” -captkirk42

“ Nice Fleer Ultra (ha!) card of the best pitcher I ever saw. ” -vrooomed

“ I like when brands run a similar design across the major sports in a release year. And this Fleer Ultra design is probably the best of those types. ” -wax_house

“ Even though I am a White Sox fan, I still watching the video of Nolan pounding Robin Ventura in the head! LOL!!! ” -carthage44

“ The Ryan Express! It was always fun to look in the paper to see how he did! ” -Joshua825

“ I was so impressed with '92 Fleer Ultra back then, only to be sorely disappointed with the 93 edition. It's almost the same just not as good as the original. ” -volbox

I like everything about this card except the meagre stats on the back.  Of course on a 1993 Nolan Ryan card, you'd have to issue a booklet if you wanted to print his full career statistics in a legible font size!

I'm of the opinion that a company's base brand should have full stats, but their premium offshoot brands (like Ultra, produced by Fleer at the time) don't really need them if the backs have big pictures.  I feel like I paid that extra $1 or $2 per pack to get more photography, not more letters and numbers.  However, regular Fleer better have had his full stats that year (I think they did).

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I liked this set so much back then that I completed the Series 1 set and I still have it. I also have tons of duplicates, if anyone's looking for them (not listed in my collection here yet). By the time Series 2 came out, they were very hard to find here b/c they sold so fast. I don't have that many of that series.
