Year: 2000

Set: Sports Illustrated for Kids I (Jan-Nov 2000) (Rate)

Card: #868 Pele

“ The card says, "the greatest soccer player of all time". Actually, one of the three greatest of all time. Alfredo Di Stefano, Diego Armando Maradona, and Pele. I think the most interesting fact about Pele that little people know is that he married Josef Mengele's daughter. Xuxa is her name. ” -deporcoruña

“ True Superstar, one of the most popular athletes ever ” -uncaian

“ The greatest, 'nuff said. ” -Gunny

“ That's pretty impressive that he stopped a war in Nigeria just by visiting. I don't understand why so many Brazilian athletes go with one name though. To me that is like saying "I don't like my name or who I am, so I will be somebody else!" But then again, I'm one of the few people who use their real names on message boards regularly. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ If only the modern New York Cosmos wore kits as simple as these. ” -jlaz10

My wife actually saw Pele in action in 1966, when he played at the Estadio Nacional Flor Blanca in San Salvador, El Salvador, when Alianza FC defeated Santos FC.  I still envy her!!!

My Dad took me to see him in 1977 when he played for the Cosmos at the old Giant Stadium. By then he controlled the wicked astro-turf bounces and rolls better than anyone else, including Beckenbauer, Chinaglia and Carlos Alberto. I think that is the greatest team of past their prime players I can remember.
