Trivia

  • After nearly 10 years without a card #7, Topps not only included a #7 card for the first time since its 1996 set, but it also produced a 10-card insert set of all the missing #7 cards from 1997-2005 with an new 1996 card.
  • Despite an agreement with the MLB Players Association where no players could appear in sets if they weren't on their team's 25-man roster and hadn't made their MLB debut yet, Topps included Royals top prospect Alex Gordon on card #297 then tried to destroy all copies of it. Besides the full and cut-out versions, there are also blank ones that include silver or gold foil.

This was the set that caused me to sell off all of my post-2000 Topps cards, and then quit collecting modern cards for 7 years--all because of that missing Alex Gordon #297 card issue. I've since gotten over that, and have learned to appreciate the 2006 set, which is also reminiscent of the 1972 set.
