  • Box Bottoms: These "cards" were featured four to a box on the bottom of each wax box. There were four different panels for a total of 16 cards. The set is lettered A-P rather than sequentially-numbered. When individually cut out, each card measures 2.5" X 3.5".
  • Glossy Send-Ins: This 60-card set was available by mailing in the special offer cards found in 1989 Topps wax packs. With enough special offer cards, and a nominal shipping & handling fee, collectors could choose one of six different "series" of Glossies, with two cards per series (cards ending in 9 and 0) featuring a "young star." The design of the set is identical to previous year's Glossies, except for a thin, red, border.
  • Glossy All-Stars: This 22-card set is exclusive to rack packs. The design of the set is identical to previous years Glossy All-Stars. The checklist consists of the starting line-ups for the 1988 All-Star Game, both managers, and both team's honorary captains.
  • Glossy Rookies: This 22-card set was available exclusively as an insert in 100-card "supermarket jumbo" packs. The design of the cards slightly resemble the Glossy All-Star set.
  • Batting Leaders: This set depicts the 22 active Major Leaguer's with the highest lifetime batting averages going into the 1989 season. The cards were distributed one per 100-card blister pack available only at K-Mart stores. Many of the photos would by recycled for the 1990 insert of the same name.
  • Final Topps base card of Pete Rose.
  • Card #11 Final Topps card of Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter before retiring.
  • Card #415 features the last Topps card of Hall of Famer Rich "Goose" Gossage.

I like the simplicity of this set. Easy to read, classy and solid photos. I find the later Topps sets during the 90's are jumbled up mess that you can barely read. Plus they are just ugly.

The first cards I remember owning as a 6 year old. I'm still fond of this set. I even added the 5 unique OPeeChee WS cards and the 5-6 unique box bottoms (Don Sutton's farewell Topps card!) to include them in my master set.

I've always thought the '89 Topps set was an uninspired design. The white border and thin colored inner border is tedious, practically a staple of the late 70's and 80's. The backs are similar too. A little harder to read than the proceeding year, because of the coloring. They do offer some cards with month by month stats, which for me add very little interest. I do like the fact that the backs offer "complete major league" stats (or minor and major league). I really dislike it when a card only offer "recent" stats or only that year's numbers. I'm not saying this is a terrible set. I'm saying it's a little bland and boring.
