As the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) was forming and strengthening, the players realized that Topps, with a monopoly on producing baseball cards, was paying them peanuts for their likenesses. As a move to put some pressure on the Brooklyn-based bubble gum giant, the players decided to not pose for Topps photographers in 1968. The result was that the 1969 set contains many older photos- taken two, three, and sometimes, more years earlier.
