This set was controversial when first issued. Fleer suffered a significant backlash for the finish of the base cards; looking back 15 years later it was actually innovative.

Fleer stated that the cards were done in this format to facilitate getting them autographed in person.

This was the last set issued using only the Fleer name during Fleer's independant run; beginning in 1998-99 they would call the set Fleer Tradition for the main set, or Fleer Platinum, which also served as the main set for several years. However, Upper Deck did issue three sets under just the Fleer nameplate in the late 2000s.

Most people continued to call the Fleer Tradition sets from 98-99 through 2000-01 simply "Fleer" although the official name is Fleer Tradition, it's also what appears on the cards.
