First Japanese MLB Player on Each Teamby Bowersbird - 34 cards (Last updated on Feb 6, 2024) |
I debated the inclusion of firsts after a team changed names. Obviously, the first Nat seemed to be worth separating from the first Expo, but was first Ray versus the first Devil Ray worth noting? In the end, I decided to include them, just as an excuse to grow the list a little bit and document team name changes over time.
Also, here's a quick list of team names which never had a Japanese player suit up for them (post-1964): Milwaukee Braves, Kansas City Athletics, Washington Senators, Seattle Pilots, Florida Marlins, and the Cleveland Guardians* (*still in existence, so could leave the list).
1. 1965 Topps #282 Giants 1965 Rookie Stars (Dick Estelle / Masanori Murakami)
1) San Francisco Giants on Sept. 1, 1964 Stats with Giants: Games: 54 / Innings Pitched: 89.1 / ERA: 3.34 / Strikeouts: 100 Notes: Murakami is THE first Japanese born player in MLB. He only played for about a year (across two seasons), so his Topps & O-Pee-Chee rookies are the only cards from his playing days. |
2. 1995 Summit #141 Hideo Nomo
2) Los Angeles Dodgers on May 2, 1995 Stats with Dodgers (2 stints): Games: 191 / Innings Pitched: 1217.1 / ERA: 3.74 / Strikeouts: 1200 Notes: The second player took ~30 years to arrive after the first. Nomo was the NL RoY and an All-Star his first year. This is Nomo's first of three appearances on the list. |
3. 1995 Topps #168 Mac Suzuki
3) Seattle Mariners on July 7, 1996 Stats with Mariners: Games: 23 / Innings Pitched: 69.2 / ERA: 4.96 / Strikeouts: 52 Notes: I was actually a bit surprised that it wasn't *Ichiro* Suzuki here. This is Mac's first of two appearances on the list. |
4. 1997 Collector's Choice #258 Shigetoshi Hasegawa
4) Anaheim Angels on April 5, 1997 Stats with Angels: Games: 287 / Innings Pitched: 442.1 / ERA: 3.85 / Strikeouts: 300 Notes: Was an All-Star in 2003 (with the Mariners). |
5. 1998 Pacific #369 Takashi Kashiwada
5) New York Mets on May 1, 1997 Stats with Mets: Games: 35 / Innings Pitched: 31.1 / ERA: 4.31 / Strikeouts: 19 Notes: Only played in 1997 season, all with the Mets. |
6. 1997 Ultra #553 Hideki Irabu
6) New York Yankees on July 10, 1997. Stats with Yankees: Games: 74 / Innings Pitched: 395.2 / ERA: 4.80 / Strikeouts: 315 Notes: Pitched in 1999 ALCS Game 3 (gave up 7 runs in relief after the Red Sox already gained an early lead - Yankees still went on to win the World Series). This is Irabu's first of three appearances. |
7. 1999 Bowman's Best #200 Masao Kida
7) Detroit Tigers on April 5, 1999. Stats with Tigers: Games: 51 / Innings Pitched: 67.1 / ERA: 6.42 / Strikeouts: 50 Notes: Actually played his last game, against Detroit, on August 3, 2005. |
8. 1999 Fleer Tradition Update #U-139 Hideo Nomo
8) Milwaukee Brewers on May 9, 1999. Stats with Brewers: Games: 28 / Innings Pitched: 176.1 / ERA: 4.54 / Strikeouts: 161 Notes: Made a brief stop with the Mets before making it to Milwaukee. This is Nomo's second of three appearances on the list. |
9. 2001 Pacific #207 Mac Suzuki
9) Kansas City Royals on June 26, 1999. Stats with Royals (2 stints): Games: 76 / Innings Pitched: 333.2 / ERA: 4.96 / Strikeouts: 223 Notes: This actually ended up being where Suzuki stayed the longest. He also returned here for the last 7 games of his career in 2002 after pitching for Colorado and Milwaukee. This is Mac's second of two appearances on the list. |
10. 2000 Upper Deck #19 Tomokazu Ohka
10) Boston Red Sox on July 19, 1999. Stats with Red Sox: Games: 33 / Innings Pitched: 134.2 / ERA: 4.61 / Strikeouts: 85 Notes: The last team to integrate after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier is actually only the 10th team to get on this list. This is Ohka's first of three appearances on the list. |

Great list and great idea! I really enjoyed going through the list.
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It's a constant work in progress as I change my mind about which cards to choose for each player and keep tweaking what to include in the descriptions of each card. Looks like Suzuki played for the Royals from 1999-2002 (with stops in Colorado and Milwaukee during 2001).
Really enjoyed this list, now I want that Ichiro Marlins card.
Glad you liked it! Yeah, that Ichiro is pretty sweet. For most of the cards, I try to pick a regular base card to aim for, but that one was an SP/VAR I couldn't say no to. |
