The 500 card club

by Billy Kingsley - 20 cards (Last updated on Jan 24, 2021)

1. 1996 Pinnacle Pole Position #52 Jeff Gordon

1138 cards
1993 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year
1995, 1997, 1998 and 2001 NASCAR champion.

The first lap Jeff ever led was the first lap of NASCAR I ever saw...and I was hooked for life. The only person to clear 1000 cards in my collection, Jeff has more NASCAR cards produced than any other person, or at least did last time I checked.
Jeff is also the winningest driver in my lifetime, with 93 wins.

2. 1988-89 Fleer #120 Michael Jordan

973 cards.

I'm actually not a huge fan of Michael Jordan...I almost always rooted against him in the NBA finals, but he always won them anyway. His numbers are grossly inflated by Upper Deck putting him in every set, and creating literally dozens of sets specifically to make more cards of him. With that said, I will absolutely be supporting him and his team in NASCAR.

3. 1993 Maxx Premier Series #6 Mark Martin

848 cards
Should have been 1990 NASCAR champion. Mark quietly accumulates LOTS of cards- just like him to not make a huge splash yet is quietly, constantly there. His exceptionally long period of greatness mostly coincided with the best years in Cardboard History as well.

4. 2003 Press Pass - Signings #NNO Dale Earnhardt Jr.

801 cards
My all time favorite athlete, and my all-time favorite pull...from a single pack I purchased at the Target in Kingston NY in late 2003. Many of Dale Jr's cards suffer from censorship. He didn't get a real quality card until 2008.

5. 1992 Maxx (Black) #2 Rusty Wallace

772 cards
1984 Rookie of the Year and 1989 Champion

When I first began watching the sport, Rusty was briefly my favorite driver, but I'm not even sure he made it all the way through 1993 before being surpassed by Ernie Irvan, who doesn't make the list.

6. 1996-97 Upper Deck #61 Shaquille O'Neal

700 cards

I liked Shaq as a player but as a broadcaster he's made Inside the NBA almost unwatchable. However, he gave the world Shaqtin' a Fool.

7. 1997 Score Board #93 Dale Jarrett

697 cards
1999 champion. One of the few people who is a second generation champion, his father Ned was 1961 and 65 Champion.
Dale won the first race I ever saw.

His son Zach is in the Baltimore Orioles system. I would like to add a card of him to my collection.

8. 1996 Score Board Autographed #43 Bobby Labonte

674 cards
2000 Champion
Bobby benefits from having his entire career come in the card era, with his Cup career beginning in 1991. It allows him to have more cards than Terry, next on the list.

9. 1996 Press Pass - Torquers #17 Terry Labonte

657 cards
1984 and 1996 Champion, Terry holds the record for longest elapsed time between Championships. Terry's career got it's start 10 years before NASCAR got cards regularly so the number of cards produced are somewhat suppressed.

My mom's all time favorite driver, I give her all my dupes of Terry. She's got more than 100 of them.

10. 1992 Pro Set - Prototypes #NNO Dale Earnhardt

648 cards
1979 Rookie of the Year, 1980, 86, 87, 90, 91, 93, 94 Champion.
Unlike many people I was not a Dale Sr. fan who switched to Dale Jr after Dale Sr. was killed. In fact, I actively rooted against Dale Sr after Bristol 1999. When he was gone, I realized that I missed his presence in the sport and only really realized I was a fan after the fact. His card numbers are somewhat lower due to the fact that when I take in collections his cards are almost always missing.
