1. 1980 Topps #365 Bobby Murcer


August 6th, 1979
Bobby Murcer Honors Thurman Munson
Four days after news broke that Yankees Captain, Thurman Munson, had tragically passed away, members of the team traveled to Munson's funeral before returning for the night game. Although Murcer was newly acquired by the Yankees, he was one of Munson's closest teammates and was even chosen to give a short speech at the funeral. In the night game, Murcer lined a single into the left field corner of Yankee Stadium scoring two runs to walk off against the rival Orioles.


2. 2001 SP Authentic #72 Mike Piazza

Mike Piazza's Home Run
Major League Baseball took ten days off following the attacks of 9/11. Hundreds of people lost their lives in attacks across the country, the most deadly spot hit was the World Trade Center in New York. When baseball resumed ten days later on September 21st, New York Mets star, Mike Piazza hit a home run to put the Mets ahead in the eighth inning. Piazza sent a home run soaring over the fence in center field, and for the first time in ten days, the crowd at Shea Stadium had something to cheer about.


3. 2014 Topps #259 David Ortiz (2013 World Series Game 6)

David Ortiz and the Red Sox; Boston Strong
On April 15th, 2013, an attack at the finish line of the Boston Marathon killed three, injured over 200 and shook Boston. Five days later, in front of a packed house at Fenway Park, David Ortiz gave an emotional speech to the crowd. Ortiz said, "This jersey that we wear today. It doesn't say Red Sox. It says Boston." After thanking the mayor and the police department, Ortiz continued, "This is our ------- city, and nobody gonna dictate our freedom. Stay strong." Six months later, Boston would win the World Series, providing a truly magical baseball season in Boston.


4. 2016 Topps Museum Collection #26 Dee Gordon

The Marlins remember Jose Fernandez
On September 25th, news broke that Miami Marlins' star pitcher, Jose Fernandez, died tragically in a boating accident. News of Jose's death shocked Miami and the sports world. When the Marlins resumed play the following day, every player on the Marlins team wore a Jose Fernandez sixteen jersey. The first batter for the Marlins that day, Dee Gordon, took the first pitch from the right handed batters box, emulating Fernandez' batting stance in remembrance of Jose Fernandez. On the next pitch, Gordon smashed a home run to right field: his first and only home run of the season. The Marlins went on to win the game 7-3.

Certainly, there is a lot more that could be added to this list. I don't have extensive knowledge before 2000, so maybe you guys can help me out there. Obviously, if you have a suggestion from another sport that you would like to see on this list, I would gladly consider adding them as well. I am not limiting to baseball, I simply am most fimiliar with baseball.
