Women in Hockey (Cards)

by torald - 119 cards (Last updated on Dec 22, 2020)

1. 1997-98 Collector's Choice #276 Angela James

James was the first superstar of modern women's hockey. Internationally, James played in the first women's world championship, a 1987 tournament that was unsanctioned. She played with Team Canada in the first IIHF World Women's Championship in 1990, setting a scoring record of 11 goals and leading Canada to the gold medal. She played in three additional world championships, winning gold medals in 1992, 1994 and 1997. Controversially, she was left off the team for the first women's Olympic hockey tournament in 1998. She played her final international tournament in 1999. She was one of the first three women inducted into the IIHF Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008 and one of the first two inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2010. She was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame in 2009.

She is one of my favorite women's hockey players of all time. She overcame many hardships in life and paved the way for future players at a time when there were not many opportunities for women's hockey. An icon!!!

2. 1992 Classic Draft Picks #59 Manon Rheaume

Rheaume was the first woman to play in any of the major North American professional sports leagues. She signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Lightning in 1992 and appeared in preseason exhibition games in 1992 and 1993. She also spent five years in professional minor leagues, appearing in a total of 24 games. She played on the Canada women's national ice hockey team, winning gold medals at the IIHF Women's World Championship in 1992 and 1994, and the silver medal at the 1998 Winter Olympics. She later also played in the WWHL for the Minnesota Whitecaps. In 2015, she dropped the puck for the opening ceremonial face-off for the first National Women's Hockey League game.

3. 1993 Classic '93 Hockey Draft #66 Cammi Granato

Granato was one of the first women to be inducted into the HHOF (she was inducted at the same time as Angela James). Granato has been a recipient of the Lester Patrick Award (2007), and she has been inducted into the International Hockey Hall of Fame (2008), the US Hockey Hall of Fame (2009) and the Hockey Hall of Fame (2010). Granato played in every world championship for the United States from the inaugural event in 1990 to 2005. She was named USA Women's Player of the Year in 1996. Granato was the captain of the U.S. women's hockey team that won a gold medal in the 1998 Winter Olympics. On February 8, 1998, she scored the first ever Olympic goal for the U.S women's hockey team. In 205 career games for the national team, Granato had 186 goals, 157 assists, and 343 points. She is the team's all-time leading scorer.

Currently, she works as a scout for the NHL Seattle organization.

4. 1997 Esso Olympic Hockey Heroes #57 Geraldine Heaney

Heaney was the third woman to be inducted into the HHOF. She played 18 seasons and over 1,000 games with the Toronto Aeros organization, won six Ontario provincial championships and was named Ontario Women's Hockey Association (OWHA) most valuable defenceman on three occasions. She is a two-time Olympian, winning silver at the inaugural tournament in 1998 tournament, and gold in 2002. She is considered to be one of the pioneers of women's hockey, and for that reason is sometimes referred to as the "Bobby Orr of women's hockey." Or maybe Bobby Orr is just the Geraldine Heaney of men's hockey...? :)

5. 2004-05 Tulsa Oilers (CHL) #NNO Angela Ruggiero

This card apparently exists, but I have yet to find an image of it.

Ruggiero was the fourth woman to be inducted into the HHOF. In her hockey career, Ruggiero was named as the best player in the NCAA and in the world by The Hockey News and named the US Olympic Committee’s Player of the Year. She was a member of the United States Women's National Ice Hockey Team, medaling in four successive Winter Olympic Games, including one gold medal in 1998, two silvers in 2002 and 2010, and one bronze in 2006. She competed in ten Women's World Championships, winning four gold medals and six silver medals. In that time she was named Best Defenseman twice at the Olympics and four times at the World Championships. Ruggiero is the all-time leader in games played for Team USA, male or female, with 256 games.

Ruggiero made several U.S. professional hockey "firsts" on January 28, 2005, when she played for the Tulsa Oilers in a Central Hockey League game against the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees. She was the first woman to actively play in a regular season professional hockey game in North America at a position other than goalie. In addition, since her brother Bill Ruggiero, was a goaltender for the Oilers, they were the first brother-sister combination to play professionally at the same time. She recorded an assist on the final goal of the game making her the only woman to score a point in a North American professional hockey game.

Just go look at her Wikipedia page to see all her awards, it's actually ridiculous.

Also, if you're reading this, please help me find her card :( She deserves better!!

6. 2007-08 In The Game O Canada #27 Danielle Goyette

Goyette was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2013, and the HHOF in 2017. She was made a member of the Order of Hockey in Canada in 2018. In the gold medal game at the 1998 Winter Olympics, Goyette scored the only goal for Canada. It would be the first Canadian goal ever scored in an Olympic women’s ice hockey gold medal game. She ranked first at the 2002 Winter Olympics with 7 assists and tied for first with 10 points. Four years earlier, Goyette had 8 goals in the 1998 Olympics. She finished her international career with 113 goals and 105 assists while appearing in 171 games.

7. 1997-98 Collector's Choice #279 Hayley Wickenheiser

Wickenheiser was inducted into the HHOF in 2019. She was the first woman to play full-time professional hockey in a position other than goalie. Wickenheiser was a member of Canada women's national ice hockey team for 23 years, from 1994 until announcing her retirement on January 13, 2017, and is the team's career points leader with 168 goals and 211 assists in 276 games. She is tied with teammates Caroline Ouellette and Jayna Hefford for the record for the most gold medals of any Canadian Olympian, and is widely considered the greatest female ice hockey player of all time. She's very legendary and I think she is probably one of the more recognizable names in women's hockey. She is the current Assistant Director of Player Development for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

8. 2010 Upper Deck World of Sports #237 Cassie Campbell

Campbell-Pascall was the captain of the Canadian women's ice hockey team during the 2002 Winter Olympics and led the team to a gold medal. The left winger took on the role of captain again in the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and again successfully led her team to the Gold Medal with a 4-1 win over Sweden. She was also captain of the Calgary Oval X-Treme, a team in the WWHL. Campbell has also played for the Toronto Aeros and the Mississauga Chiefs. She is known for being a great role model and humanitarian.

9. 2007-08 In The Game O Canada #23 Caroline Ouellette

Ouellette was a member of the Canadian national women's ice hockey team and a member of Canadiennes de Montreal in the CWHL. Among her many accomplishments are four Olympic gold medals, 12 IIHF Women's World Championship medals (six gold, six silver), 12 Four Nations Cup medals (eight gold, four silver) and four Clarkson Cup championships. Along with teammates Jayna Hefford and Hayley Wickenheiser, Ouellette is one of only five athletes to win gold in four consecutive Olympic games.

Ouellette is married to American hockey player and Olympic silver-medalist Julie Chu. Real Romeo and Juliet type stuff :)

10. 1997-98 Collector's Choice #289 Jayna Hefford

Hefford was inducted into the HHOF in 2018. She helped Canada win four-straight Olympic gold medals from 2002 to 2014 and famously scored the gold-medal winning goal at the 2002 Winter Olympics. At the club level across three leagues, she scored 439 goals in 418 competitive games including a CWHL record 44 goals in 2008-09.

I know that the Ohio State women's hockey team has a couple of team sets; other universities may also have them. https://www.tcdb.com/ViewSet.cfm/sid/175591/2005-06-Honda-Ohio-State-Buckeyes-Women is the only one with a checklist, but my memory is that there is at least one other season done

Hilary Knight is in the 2014 Topps US Olympic set, which is in the multi-sport category.  There may be others. I just know her for sure because I have the card.  You might also check the 2018 set.  Those were hobby only so I never got any packs of those.

It was nice getting women's cards in the mix with the men. Manon Rheaume's cards were a big deal back when I was in grade school, and I definitely remember getting that Angela James card fresh out of a pack.

i agree with DanD.  I had a huge crush on Rheaume when I was in high school.  I may add her to my 'Favorite Individuals' PC before too much longer.

I need to make time to read this in full. The lack of a single card for someone like Kendall Coyne is downright negligence.

The Lamoreaux twins both got cards in the first Topps Winter Olympics set. i may have spelled their name(s) wrong.

Billy, I couldn't agree more. I love watching the NWHL and it's a shame there aren't any cards made for them currently. More than that though, there's hardly any cards for American women's hockey players which feels crazy considering they won gold at the olympics in 2018 and then gold again at worlds in 2019. Like what does a girl have to do to get a card of their favorite players ??

You did amazing job on these

Just a little more on Cassie Campbell, The next winter olympic games is Campbell-Pascall's third Olympic Games as a broadcaster. ... She is a trailblazer for women covering the sport, as she was the first woman to do colour-commentating on Hockey Night in Canada, where she currently works as a TV analyst. And in ,y opinion is a good and even better than most. Jeff

Great write up. Just wish someone like Upper Deck would pick up the NWHL to make their own set of cards. Another woman I could think of that wasn't added is Erica Holst. I know this because I have her only card lol
