Fred Dryer was close to being the Sam Malone character on Cheers. In fact, the recovering alcoholic turned bar owner was originally conceptualized as a former wide receiver! When the slimmer Ted Danson nailed the role though, the ex-athlete's sport was shifted to baseball instead. Dryer would wind up making sporadic appearances as Sam's friend and TV sports anchor for a local station's news reports. | ||
