Best MLB Players By Country/Territory

by DarkSide830 - 60 cards (Last updated on Apr 30, 2021)

1. 1978 Topps #580 Rod Carew

Panama Canal Zone

Carew's rise to stardom began under less-than-ideal circumstances in GatĂșn during the era of the Panama Canal Zone. He more than made a name for himself in time, as 18 years into his career he was named to 18 All-Star Games.

2. 1993 Fleer Final Edition #F-277 Jeff Bronkey

Bronkey is the only person born in Afghanistan to play Major League Baseball. Bronkey appeared in 45 games split almost evenly between the Rangers and Brewers between 1993 and 1995.

3. 1975 Topps #389 Tony Solaita

American Samoa

Given I'm using BBREF to make this list and they include territories as separate entities in their birthplace database, I figured I'd follow suit and give a nod to players from these territories. Tony Solaita gets the nod here for the American Samoa, and even if he wasn't the only option he had a good enough career to have been a contender for most countries on this list.

4. 2019 Topps #167 Xander Bogaerts

Sticking with the territory theme here, we get to the Dutch territory of Aruba. Sidney Ponson might have been a contender here, but "X" has already nearly doubled his career WAR and is on pace to obliterate it.

5. 1999 Pacific Paramount #128 Dave Nilsson

Here is where the hard choices really start. I was tempted to give Grant Balfour the top spot here, but we'll go with the brilliant former Brewers catcher and Australian baseball icon who might have made this spot a lock had injury concerns not hindered him along the way.

6. 1994 Conlon Collection TSN #1298 Dutch Ulrich

Dutch Ulrich was the clear choice out of an underwhelming Austria group. Despite seeing a promising career end early due to a vicious fight with pneumonia that saw him miss the entire 1928 season and eventually cut his life short at 29, Ulrich still managed to amass 8.1 WAR as a reliable swingman for the mid-1920's Phillies.

7. 1962 Topps #477 Andre Rodgers

With the Bahamanian baseball scene developing with prospects such as Jazz Chisholm and Lucius Fox hitting the scene, Rodgers may not remain the best baseball player from The Bahamas for long, but we'll keep the productive former Cubs shortstop and heir to Ernie Banks in this spot for now.

8. 1996 Best #49 Brian Lesher

The only ever Belgian-born MLB player, Lesher played in parts of five seasons with the Athletics, Mariners and Blue Jays from 1996 to 2002.

9. 1991 Donruss The Rookies #54 Chito Martinez

Martinez was born in what was once British Honduras and is now Belize, and to this day remains the only player to have been born there.

10. 2014 Topps #620 Yan Gomes

I was temped to put Eric Pardinho, a prospect I'm quite bullish on, in the spot for Brazil, but Tommy John Surgery has slowed his timeline. Instead we'll go with Brazil's first Major Leaguer, (2012) Silver Slugger winner, (2014) and World Series Champion, (2019) Yan Gomes.

Billy Kingsley

Fun list! I've been planning and "Around the World with the NBA" post almost since I started Cardboard History in 2014, yet I still haven't even started it.

yeah I've been sitting on this for a bit. eventually managed to finish the blurbs. if anyone knows of any active prospects from countries not on this list give me a shout.

If you're including US Territories then Rod Carew can be included.  He was born in the Panama Canal Zone, a US territory.

United Kingdom consists of four separate countries; England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland.  If you're going to include territories then why not the actual countries of the United Kingdom.

I was considering that and might eventually but I just kinda got lazy. like i said, just used the breakdowns that bbref uses because it's easier. I probably will do that later.
