Must Have Sets for Hockey Collectors

by jbud1984 - 10 cards (Last updated on Mar 26, 2020)

1. 1951-52 Parkhurst #52 The Winning Goal (Gerry McNeil / Bill Barilko)

1951-52 Parkhurst was the first post war set and features some big rookie cards of some the games greatest players such as Gordie Howe and Maurice Richard. The cards were sorted in a cement mixer and then sorted into packs by hand, making it difficult to find high grade examples of some of the cards.

2. 1968-69 O-Pee-Chee #176 Gary Smith

1968-69 O-Pee-Chee was the first set featuring the new NHL with expansion teams, it was no longer the Original Six. This set features great card design, with a few hilarious airbrushed cards such as the Frank Mahovlich.

3. 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee WHA #1 The Howes (Gordie Howe / Mark Howe / Marty Howe)

1974-75 OPC WHA.It wasn't until the third season of existence that the Rival League had a main stream release from O-Pee-Chee. The set features Gordie Howe with his Sons Mark and Marty. This is a difficult set to find in high grade.

4. 1974-75 O-Pee-Chee #161 Don Cherry

1974-75 O-Pee-Chee. This set is loaded with Rookie Cards and shows great 70's flair. Coaches received cards in the sets and both Scotty Bowman and Don Cherry were given cards. During his collecting days Scotty Bowman hoarded his Rookie Cards and still has a nice stash of them in his collection.

5. 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee #18 Wayne Gretzky

1979-80 OPC. The Gretzky Rookie Card is perhaps one of the most recognizable cards ever. It is also heavily sought by collectors from any generation. The rest of the set lacks any other huge Rookie Cards but it does feature the last cards of legends Bobby Hull and Gordie Howe.

6. 1990-91 Upper Deck French #525 Sergei Fedorov

1990-91 Upper Deck French. At one point this Fedorov was selling for over $100+. The printing quantity was eventually determined to be larger than originally thought and now these cards are highly affordable. This set is an important part of hockey card history.

7. 1990-91 O-Pee-Chee Premier #50 Jaromir Jagr

1990-91 OPC Premier. This is one of the few sets that still holds value from the peak of the boom years. The Jagr is a still highly desirable card and sealed boxes still sell for $80+. It features a strong Rookie Class and at one point was highly collectible.

8. 1990-91 Score Canadian #440 Eric Lindros

1990-91 Score. If you collected through the 90s, you want this Lindros card. It was the first hockey set produced by Score and it was the only set you could find cards of Eric Lindros in during the 1990-91 Season. People hoarded the Lindros cards and at one point could easily sell for $20 each.

9. 2000-01 Pacific Private Stock Titanium - Game-Used Gear #54 Teemu Selanne

2000-01 Pacific Private Stock Titanium. This was the first set to feature one guaranteed game used per pack and completely changed the hobby forever. 1996-97 Upper Deck was the first hockey series to feature Game Used cards, however the pull odds were incredibly tough.

10. 2005-06 Upper Deck #201 Sidney Crosby

2005-06 Upper Deck. This set features one of the best Rookie Classes that includes Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin. The set was loaded due to the 2004-05 lock out and I'm not sure we will see an epic Rookie Class like this ever again.
