Awesome Steve Yzermanby vrooomed - 14 cards (Last updated on Apr 22, 2020) |
1. 1983 Canadian National Juniors #NNO Steve Yzerman
An oversized card from before the draft. I do believe this was obtained as a set from a dealer at an Expo in TO. Was very cool to mark the oldest known card off the list when we got this. |
2. 1987-88 Little Caesars Detroit Red Wings #NNO Steve Yzerman
Local food issues (especially oversized ones) can be very difficult to find. The various years of the Little Caesar's Pizza cards are among those. I think we also got this (as well as other LCP cards) at an Expo. |
3. 1994-95 Upper Deck Be a Player - Autographs #115 Steve Yzerman
Got this at a card show in southern NJ (Cherry Hill Mall). There always seemed to be plenty of shows down there, while in the southern NY area, not so much. Plus, I had my best friend who did a lot of the shows there, plus my parents were still living there at the time, so we would visit friends and family, and hit a card show. We debated on this one as it was more than we had spent on a card at this point. But, considering it was the first pack-issued Yzerman autograph, and it was limited to 600 copies, we knew if we missed this one, we might never have that chance again (pre-ebay). Granted, I haven't looked for this card, but I don't remember ever seeing another one after this. Needless to say, we did buy it before we left that show. |
4. 1995-96 SP - Special FX #FX7 Steve Yzerman
Another card show, in southern NJ (Pennsauken). I think I was there with my best friend (Swami Lee). I actually had a small corner of his 3 tables to set up some stuff to sell and to help him keep an eye on his inventory. I remember that I wound up selling off a ton of 1992 Star Co. sets. And with some of those funds, I proceeded to spend more on any Yzerman card we had bought yet (this was before the AU card). It just looked VERY cool (and we had this before we had the regular [not die-cut] version). The hologram moves with you. |
5. 1996-97 Select Certified - Mirror Gold #41 Steve Yzerman
Nothing too special about this one, just that I remember it being pretty tough to track down. |
6. 1996-97 Upper Deck - Game Jersey #GJ1 Steve Yzerman
The first hockey jersey cards, and yzerman was (of course) part of that set. At the time, the order of value of the cards in sets was Wayne Gretzky, Patrick Roy, and then Yzerman. So being the 3rd most valuable player in the league, card companies put him in almost every insert set. This may be the only hockey jersey card set that has retained the value (relatively) over the years. I don't remember now even remotely what kind of price we paid for this when we bought it, or where we got it. But, due to the history of the set, it's a very cool card to have, |
7. 1997-98 Donruss Canadian Ice - National Pride #4 Steve Yzerman
Acetate, die-cut, and serial numbered. Not one of the hardest to find, but one of the nicer looking cards. I think this was obtained at one of the many card shows we were attending then. |
8. 1997-98 Donruss Elite - Prime Numbers Die Cut #10c Steve Yzerman
Even though this card has a serial number on the back of 539, these cards were "split" between being left uncut and being die-cut. There were 3 Yzerman cards (10a, 10b, & 10c). 10a had 500 of 539 die-cut (39 left uncut), 10b had 30 die-cut (509 left uncut), and 10c had only 9 die-cut (with 530 left uncut). We were regulars to a card show in northern NJ (Montvale), and one of the regular dealers pulled this from packs. Cost more than the BAP AU, but it would have been much more had it not been one of "our guys" who pulled it. He was waiting for us to come into the show and he had it in his briefcase (or similar). He did not have it on his table. (We had several dealers who would hold stuff for us. Because of that, we'd sometimes buy multiples of some cards. Not this one!) I don't recall ever seeing any of the other 8 copies of this. |
9. 1997-98 Donruss Preferred - Precious Metals #14 Steve Yzerman
Maybe not that rare, not that hard to find, but very cool. The "card" itself, the metal portion, is actually somewhat smaller than a standard card. But the plastic lamination that shrouds the card makes it standard size. The card is made of metal and contains a gram of platinum. Metal cards of this thickness (same as a regular card, not super thick like the Highland Mint cards) were a new thing then. I just always liked the look of this card. |
10. 1997-98 Pinnacle Totally Certified - Platinum Mirror Gold #38 Steve Yzerman
I don't remember how or when we got this one, but I know for a fact that we never paid a premium for special serial numbers. (Traditionally, first, last, and uniform number carry a premium.) This card is not only numbered out of only 30, this is #19 of 30. A stunning card. |
