Places I Have Been

21. 2004 Upper Deck MLS #15 Ritchie Kotschau

Invesco Field at Mile High
Denver, Colorado

Whilst visiting some places out west I worked with the group I was with to get a tour of this place through the Colorado Rapids. It was the summer so it was set up for the Colorado Rapids to play.

Memorable Moments
The Rapids staff were kind enough to let us kick some MLS regulation soccer balls around on the pitch. I was the only left footer there as usual.

The Rapids used the locker room that is used for the visiting NFL team. An official MLS poster was hung on the wall showing the proper way to wear your kit. I wanted that poster but my better judgement prevailed.

Whilst walking around a few Broncos staff were there. They kind of looked at us with a "don't touch our stuff" kinda look.

22. 2017 Stadium Club MLS #88 Wil Trapp

Columbus Crew Stadium
Columbus, Ohio

DOS a CERO!

September 3, 2005 USA versus Mexico for 2006 FIFA World Cup Qualification. Greatest Sporting event I have ever witnessed live. The atmosphere was electric and raucous. Crew stadium is a great place and I am so glad that they will be staying there.

23. 2010 Topps #106 Troy Polamalu

Heinz Field
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Never been to a Steelers game here but have seen two great soccer friendlies.

The first was in 2004 as Chelsea faced AS Roma. It was cool to see Jose Mourihno manage his first game for Chelsea in Pittsburgh. I still had his image in my mind of just winning the UEFA Champions League with FC Porto and it seemed to me he couldn't wait to get that medal of his neck. Seeing Francesco Totti with Roma was sublime.

The second was in the summer of 2018 as Borussia Dortmund played SL Benfica. Got to see the great new hope for American soccer in Christian Pulisic. He was outstanding, such pace and skill for such a young man.

24. 2009 Upper Deck MLS #33 Bryan Namoff

RFK Stadium
Washington, DC

Fall of 2009 USA versus Costa Rica the final match of the CONCACAF 2010 FIFA World Cup Qualification. My first thought was that RFK was a dump. It was rainy and a bit on the chilly side. The US was already qualified. The US scored the equalizer in extra time which forced Costa Rica into a playoff with Uruguay, kind of felt bad for them.

Memorable Moments
Bryan Ruiz of Los Ticos was on fire in the first half.

Having all the US fans raise their Number 9 cards and cheering in the ninth minute in tribute to Charlie Davies who lost his chance to play in the World Cup following a terrible car accident.

Dancing with the Costa Rican fans during half time was a blast.

25. 1991 ProTrac's Formula One #85 Canada

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve
Montreal, Quebec

Ventured up this way for the 2010 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix.

Memorable Moments
Qualifying was awesome. Sitting in the grand stand between turn 1 and 2 I swear I could feel the pressure when the cars downshifted.

Race day, standing just down from the exit of the hairpin I found it impossible to get a picture of the cars as the acceleration was tremendously fast.

Qualifying was the same day England played the USA in the 2010 World Cup. Made my way back to McGill University dormitory where I was staying just in time to watch the match with a room full of Englishmen. As the match ended 1-1 the English fans grumbled and looked at me. I stated rather loudly, "You couldn't beat us in 1776, you couldn't beat us in 1812, you couldn't beat us in 1950, so eff off to your little island!" One of the English fans then smiled and said, "Good one, mate."

26. 2016-17 Upper Deck Compendium - Blue #772 Conor Sheary

CONSOL Energy Center / PPG Paints Arena
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Seen some hockey games and practices here.

Memorable Moments
Mrs Gunny got to see her first NHL game here against the Dallas Stars.

Took her picture inside a giant goalie mask.

The 2018-19 season I was fortunate enough to get free tix to one of them luxury suites. The spread that was laid out was outstanding.

27. 2017 Donruss #161 Jordan Reed

FedExField
Landover, Maryland

July 23, 2019 went here to see the glory that is Arsenal Football Club against Real Madrid in a pre-season friendly. The match ended 2-2 at full time but Madrid won it on penalties, oh well.

Memorable Moments
We decided to park in a nearby office complex which gave us about a 20 minute walk to the stadium. This paid off huge dividends after the match as we left and traffic was not a problem.

Arsenal take a 2-0 lead in the first half goals from Alexandre Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

When Marcelo came on in the 2nd half for Real Madrid it did shift the balance of the match. His play was outstanding and lead to a scruffy goal scored by Gareth Bale.

28. 2010 Upper Deck #558 Mets Ballpark

Citi Field
Flushing, New York

June 17, 2023 myself and the Lovely Mrs Gunny did a weekend getaway to Flushing and were lucky enough to catch the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets game. The Cradinals won 5-3 Boooooo.

Memorable Moments
It was nice to be within walking distance of the ball yard so we didn't have to deal with parking.

Mrs Gunny was finally learning the rules of baseball. She took some great photos the best one being me in front of the Tom Seaver statue.

Brandon Nimmo homered on the first pitch thrown which was cool.

This was my first time dealing with digital tickets, I am not a fan.

Nah, been to New York City only twice.  Once in 1974, it was dump and I was forced to watch a buncha broadway shows that were all terrible.  The second time was a quick two day vacation in 2014 with Mrs Gunny.  Did the usual touristy stuff, Statue of Liberty, Bus tour and a wax musueum.
