Places I Have Been

by Gunny - 28 cards (Last updated on Jun 20, 2023)

11. 1989-90 Hoops #205 Ron Harper

Richfield Coliseum
Richfield Township, Ohio

Late 80s and my roommate at the time was a huge Celtics fan. He got tix for a Cavaliers and Celtics game at Richfield.

Memorable Moments
Getting to see Larry Bird live, amazing talent.

The place was in the middle of nowhere.

The PA announcer and his excitement when a certain guy scored. WOOOOOOORLD B. FREEEEEEE!

12. 1971 Topps #1 1970 World Champions (Baltimore Orioles)

Memorial Stadium
Baltimore, Maryland

In the 80s made a few trips to Baltimore to see some American League baseball.

Memorable Moments
Sitting down and getting ready to watch the game the thing that struck me as really different from watching games in Pittsburgh was the amount of people keeping score. Usually in Pittsburgh I would be one of the few, in Baltimore there were loads of scorekeepers.

Rickey Henderson, got to see him play for the Yankees here. The most entertaining base runner I ever saw.

This was the second end of a personal baseball double header. Went to a Pirates game at Three Rivers game with a friend, it was an early afternoon start. As the game was getting close to being finished we decided to drive to Baltimore for an Orioles night game. Made it there in time for the second inning.

13. 1971 Topps #41 Rick Austin

Cleveland Stadium
Cleveland, Ohio

Made two trips to this old stadium in Cleveland in the 1980s.

Memorable Moments
I never got to see Bert Blyleven pitch when he was with the Buccos so I made a point to see him when he was with the Indians.

The only time I got to see Kirby Puckett live was at this Stadium.

The place had broken windows, wooden seats and smelt of pee.

14. 1990 Pro Set #42 Scott Norwood

Rich Stadium
Orchard Park, New York

Early 90s and a friend at work got free tickets for a Steelers and Bills match up in upstate New York. Who can resist free tickets?

Memorable Moments
People were renting out their front yards for parking.

I was not looking forward for the trip home because I knew I had to cut the grass.

Bought a Bills hat that my Steelers loving friends trashed on the way home.

15. 1992-93 Topps #448 David Bruce

Cow Palace
Daly City, California

Another trip to visit dear sis and I made sure the Penguins would be at the Cow Palace.

Memorable Moments
Got free pre-game beers in a local Irish pub because I knew what hurling sticks were.

Lots of cool pictures in this place from past cattle shows and rodeos.

The Penguins crushed the Sharks who were just an expansion team back then.

16. 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee #245 Boston Bruins

Boston Garden
Boston, Massachusetts

I was overjoyed to visit one of the great old NHL barns before they all disappeared. Saw a great Penguins Bruins game.

Memorable Moments
Just walking into the place. What a thrill. It really felt like walking into a time machine.

The rink was tiny. But it was cool to be able to see the Penguins broadcast team headed by Mike Lange perched in the press box.

After the game went to a Sports bar across from my hotel. Told the barkeep to serve us somethin' the locals like, he gave us Rolling Rock, yeesh.

17. 1975-76 O-Pee-Chee #86 Los Angeles Kings

Great Western Forum
Inglewood, California

With Gretzky now in a Kings uniform I jumped at the chance to see the Penguins in LA (We Love It!).

Memorable Moments
Meeting Paul Coffey and Rod Buskas on this trip.

The Penguins got destroyed by the Kings but the Kings fans were really nice and liked the fact that some Penguins fans made the trek.

Met some local fellers who invited us to Sports bar post-game. They ended trying to steal some of the photos hung up on the wall. Luckily the owners had them well screwed into place.

18. 2007 Topps #234 Pittsburgh Pirates

PNC Park
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Greatest ballpark in the world. Shame about the team most years.

Memorable Moments
Todd Ritchie of the Pirates threw a 1 hitter against the Kansas City Royals. He had a no-no for 8.1 innings. Closest I ever got to see a no-hitter.

Went to see the Bucs and the Padres. The Padres had some kinda strange rookie hazing thing going on, all the rookies had to take warm ups with Star Wars backpacks on their backs.

Took Mrs Gunny to her first MLB game against the Miami Marlins. We parked across the river and took the subway to the ballyard. As we walked to the park I asked for the tickets. Mrs Gunny searched her purse and then realized she had left them in the car. Another subway trip to get the tickets and another back across and we made it inside just as the anthem was finishing. We had a good ole laugh at that incident. I wore my black Dave Parker jersey and got many compliments.

19. 2006 Upper Deck #391 Jeremy Accardo

Pacific Bell Park
San Francisco, California

Another sis visit and a pre-season game between the Giants and the Athletics was a pleasant surprise. This ball park is the second nicest one I have seen.

Memorable Moments
The Willie McCovey statue is freakin' awesome.

Seeing Jason Kendall in an Oakland A's uniform was kinda strange after seeing him in a Pirates uniform for so many years.

We were sat in the outfield and had a great view of the Pacific Ocean and all the ocean liners coming into port from Asia.

20. 2007-08 Upper Deck #329 Craig Rivet

HP Pavilion
San Jose, California

Same trip as above and I got to see the Sharks and Coyotes square off. Wayne Gretzky was the head coach of the 'yotes.

Memorable Moments
The walk to the place. My hotel was close enough that I could walk to the game. Tons of Sharks fans were making a similar walk it was a sea of teal.

Evegeni Nabokov, the Sharks goalie, had an outstanding game.

The upper bowl is the only upper deck were I thought I would fall when getting out of my seat.

Nah, been to New York City only twice.  Once in 1974, it was dump and I was forced to watch a buncha broadway shows that were all terrible.  The second time was a quick two day vacation in 2014 with Mrs Gunny.  Did the usual touristy stuff, Statue of Liberty, Bus tour and a wax musueum.

I may copy it too.  Awesome list, especially Crew Stadium.  I hope to get back there in the next month or two.
