What about Darryl Kile. He died during the season and even though he was not ith the team at the time they unnoffically reitred his number. In fact the player on the team at the time who was wearing it switched to a new number. Since Kile's death, the Astros, Rockies, and Cardinals have not assigned number 57 to another player, although none of those teams has formally retired the number.

"Since Kile's death, the Astros, Rockies, and Cardinals have not assigned number 57 to another player, although none of those teams has formally retired the number. There's the answer @ckrakowski The lists I made here are of formally retired numbers and other such tributes. Otherwise I'd be doing a lot more research to determine if gaps in years a number was issued was because of some memorial tribute, or unofficial retirement (see 24, 17 and 8 with the Mets), or just plain not issued ;) |
