Signs of the 80s: Winningest Goalies

by bevans - 23 cards (Last updated on Mar 1, 2020)

11. 2011-12 Parkhurst Champions - Autographs #79 Don Beaupre

#11 - 154 Wins

Beaupre was a rookie on that 1980-81 Minnesota team. He actually played more games than Meloche in the regular season but sat for most of the playoffs. Beaupre played in two All-Star games in a 17-year career which included lengthy stints with Minnesota and Washington and brief stopovers in Ottawa and Toronto.

12. 2009-10 In The Game Between The Pipes - Authentic Goaliegraphs #A-PRI Pat Riggin

#12 - 153 Wins

Riggin began his career in the WHA (obviously) and later played with Atlanta/Calgary, Washington, Boston, and Pittsburgh. He won the Jennings Trophy and was a Second Team All-Star with Washington in 1983-84, only to be traded to Boston (for Peeters) a year later.

13. 2012-13 In The Game Between The Pipes - Authentic Goaliegraphs #A-GH Glen Hanlon

#13 - 150 Wins

Hanlon played for Vancouver, St. Louis, the New York Rangers, and Detroit. And sure, I'll admit that for much of the decade I couldn't distinguish Hanlon from the similarly travelled Greg Millen. He's remembered for allowing Wayne Gretzky's first NHL goal; that has to count for something.

14. 2017-18 SPx - Super Scripts #SS-TB Tom Barrasso

#14 - 149 Wins

Barrasso made the rare jump straight to the NHL from high school and won the Vezina and Calder Trophies and was a First Team All-Star as an 18-year rookie with Buffalo in 1983-84. He followed that up with the Jennings Trophy and Second Team All-Star berth the following year.

Barrasso soon fell out of favour in Buffalo and was traded to Pittsburgh in 1988, where he won back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. He also had very brief late career layovers in Ottawa, Carolina, Toronto, and St. Louis before finally retiring after 19 seasons in 2003.

15. 2010-11 In The Game Between The Pipes - Autographs #A-DB Dan Bouchard

#15 - 145 Wins

Now that's an autograph! And it appears that Bouchard always signs it that way, complete with the smiley face and reference to his favourite psalm.

Bouchard played 14 years in the NHL, mostly with Atlanta and Quebec. He had five Top 10 finishes in goals against, six Top 10 finishes in save percentage, and seven Top 10 finishes in wins, but was never named to an All-Star team.

16. 2006-07 Parkhurst - Autographs #35 Kelly Hrudey

#17 - 138 Wins

Hrudey played 15 years in the NHL with the New York Islanders (1984-1989), Los Angeles Kings (1989-1996) and San Jose Sharks (1996-1998). He went to the Stanley Cup Final with the Kings in 1993 but is better known today for his post-playing career as an analyst on Hockey Night in Canada.

17. 2015-16 In The Game Final Vault - 2004-05 In The Game Franchises Edition Autographs (Black Vault Stamp) #A-JV John Vanbiesbrouck

#18 - 138 Wins

Vanbiesbrouck won the Vezina Trophy winner in 1985-86 with the Rangers and was still a top goalie a decade later when he led Florida to the Stanley Cup Final in only its third season. Vanbiesbrouck played in three All-Star games.

18. 2006-07 In The Game Between The Pipes - Autograph #A-BH Brian Hayward

#19 - 134 Wins

Acquired from Winnipeg in a 1986 trade for "blink and you missed him" Steve Penney, Hayward and Patrick Roy formed an outstanding tandem for the rest of the decade, sharing three consecutive Jennings Trophies and missing out on a fourth by just two goals against.

Hayward and Roy split crease duties equally in the regular season and Hayward even had the better numbers some of those years, but it was usually all Roy in the playoffs.

19. 1995-96 Upper Deck Be a Player - Autographs #S197 Patrick Roy

#20 - 133 Wins

Someday I will try to get a signed Roy card which pictures him with Montreal. But they usually start at about $100 so for now I am content to settle for this hideous airbrushed monstrosity.

Roy won four Stanley Cups, three Vezinas, three Conn Smythes, five Jennings, and was a First or Second Team All-Star six times. His 551 career wins is second all-time.

20. 2010-11 Panini Luxury Suite #113 Richard Brodeur

#21 - 131 Wins

"King Richard" was the starting goalie for Vancouver's improbable run to the 1982 Stanley Cup Final. The Canucks finished the regular season three games below .500 (30-33-17) yet somehow that was good enough for them to have home ice advantage through three rounds of playoffs. Once they finally had to face a team with a winning record in the Final, they were promptly swept by the Islanders.
