Prominent Detroit Tigers for each Uniform Number

by dsorek - 69 cards (Last updated on Jan 2, 2019)

1. 1996 Score #487 Lou Whitaker

#1

'Sweet' Loooouuuuuu! I still remember going to a game in 1982 and asking why people were booing him and then I realized everyone was yelling his name. I truly believe he deserves to be in the HOF, BUT only if he was inducted with Alan Trammell.

2. 1941 Play Ball #19 Charlie Gehringer

#2
Retired

'The Mechanical Man'. Charlie (or Charley on many of his cards) had his number retired from the Tigers. Likely the greatest 2B who ever played for the Tigers and that's saying a lot in the company of Lou Whitaker, Ian Kinsler and Placido Polanco.

3. 1997 Upper Deck #75 Alan Trammell

#3
Retired

Tram - Happy I was able to witness firsthand his induction into the Baseball HOF. He is one of the most loyal Tigers ever and the fans still love him, even though he was unfortunately the manager of the 2003 Tigers, one of the worst teams ever.

4. 2005 Topps #137 Bobby Higginson

#4

Higgy was not very well liked and retired quietly after a shortened 2005 season. He had a lot of potential, and was a fairly solid performer, but rarely came through in clutch situations and never developed into the leader a high paid player usually is expected to take. He had the great misfortune of playing for the Tigers during some pretty dark days that I hope never return, but they were not due to him.

5. 2011 Topps #150 Hank Greenberg

#5
Retired

Hammerin' Hank had an awesome career with the Tigers and led them to 2 World Series titles in 1935 and 1945. He had to put up with a lot of anti-Semite remarks but was the first true power hitter for the Tigers.

6. 1974 Topps #215 Al Kaline

#6
Retired

Mr. Tiger. First number retired by the franchise shortly after he retired. I love that he stayed with the franchise for so long after his playing career in the TV Broadcast booth and in the front office. Hard to imagine a more loyal Tiger than Mr. Kaline.

7. 2008 Topps #76 Ivan Rodriguez

#7

Hall of Famer, but with the Rangers, his signing signaled a rebirth of prominent baseball in Detroit and we are grateful for his eagerness to play in the cold weather.

8. 1980 Topps #80 Ron LeFlore

#8

An All Star in 1976 after his stint at Jackson State Penitentiary. An inspiration for second chances indeed. Justin Upton was an all star also and wore #8, but Ron LeFlore played more games with the Tigers.

9. 2011 Topps #331 Carlos Guillen

#9

Nick Castellanos has done well in #9, but still not as prominent and dominant as a player as Carlos Guillen. He was an impact player and solidified the middle infield for the Tigers for the better part of a decade.

10. 2013 Topps Heritage #248 Jim Leyland

#10

Traditionally a manager's number, I chose one who made a huge impact with the team, taking them to 2 World Series. An honor it was for me to meet him in Spring Training 2018 in Bradenton. I hope to edit this when he's also inducted into Cooperstown someday.

As a Tiger's fan and collector I loved this!

Using our database concept of no card numbers (NNO), you should pick one player from the NNO uniform era.  And we all know who that would be.

Where are #63, 66 and 70?

Interesting choice on #4.  I probably would have chosen Rudy York.

Nice list, Dan! I don't know too many jersey numbers in baseball, and certainly wouldn't for the Tigers, either, but I do collect Sweet Lou who appropriately leads this list, and Jack Morris. Interesting that Jose Lima is on there, too. I didn't realize he played for Detroit. He was a character, but well-loved in Houston.

I did something similar for baseball (with football and basketball) that I display on four large frames in my office, but this gives me the idea to do it for my Astros!
