Um, Howard and Utley are both still playing. 36 & 37, respectively. They're both starters and I don't think either is retiring. How do they fit in this very nice list?

The two men I immediately thought of are somehow not on your list!! Roy Campanella and Thurman Munson. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley don't fit the theme at all in my humble opinion.
