Comments
One you could possibly add could be Jose Altuve.
Ichiro would be a good choice for this list.
Thanks for the comments. Altuve is on the Hall of Shamers list for Astros trashcans. I forgot about Ichiro, thanks!
| ||
Don't know man, you lost me at Joey Votto in the honourable mention list.
Yes, I think in the end Votto gets in, and I hope he does, but he may have to go through several rounds of voting like Helton. Trying to keep the list to the most "sure-fire". He's a big name 1Bmen but sometimes big name guys are left out like Mattingly & Garvey.
| ||
Not sure I'd put Judge as a sure fire member either yet. He's already in his 30's, hasn't had a great health history, and may not have the body type that will stand up to a long career. He also got a comparatively late start in his MLB career (he became a full time MLB'er at age 25). He's had 3 very good to great seasons, but a lot of guys have that on their CV. His numbers right now, less than 300 Hr, less than 600 rbi aren't HOF worthy.
| ||
Good point. I can't believe he's only two years younger than Stanton. Stanton has HOF talent but just can't stay on the field. Judge may turn out similar. I think I'll put them both on the HM list. Thanks.
I'd probably put Manny Machado on the honourable mention list at least. He's 2 months younger than Judge has better career numbers than him right now and seems likely to hang on longer. He can be a bit of a hothead at times, but doesnt have any morality question marks I am aware of.
Good call. His WAR and JAWS are already up there and he still should have a good number of years to go.
| ||
Judge might end up as one of the most polarizing cases in history. Say he retires with 400+ HR (I can't see him getting to 500, he'd need 6 more seasons averaging 40 to get there, and I don't think he has that much ahead of him), less than 1000 RBI , less than 2,000 hits (virtually guaranteed, he's not even at 900 yet ) and no World Series. He gets no peripheral benefits on his baserunning, obp, defense (although he's better than you might think). Does he get in as one of the dominant home run producers of his time, or is he a more charismatic version of Dave Kingman ?
| ||
Might end up like Donaldson. He got a late start, dominated for some years, then started fading a bit to soon to really rack up the career #'s for HOF consideration.
Buster Posey will never be in the Hall of Fame and neither will Joe Maue. Both Hall of Very Good. Goldschmidt Hall of Very Good. A few of the guys on the list haven't really played long enough to speculate upon for HOF.... and Judge doesn't have time on his side, but I think he MAY have a chance of he can perhaps win another MVP and reach 400-450 home runs, which would be tough...(Dale Murphy 398 HRs, 2,100+ hits, 2 MVPs, 7-time All-star and 5 Gold Gloves. He will get in but it may be a few more years)... Machado's chances will greatly depend on how long he can play and play well. If he stays healthy enough to be playing decently by age 35-36, he will get in... WAR, JAWS and all the other pseudo stats of Bill James are not reliable measures. Most of the rest of the guys on the list I agree will have good consideration for induction, unless they have a DWI or some other ridiculous thing that doesn't exemplify a perfect squeaky clean choir boy. But I think Jose Altuve will be a HOFer if he performs decently for 2-3 more seasons, or if he has 4-5 subpar seasons. He's accomplished way too much to not get strong consideration.

Thanks for the feedback Alomar_Collector. Dale M. is on my Hall of Snubs list and Altuve's on my Hall of Shamers list due to the trashcan scandal.
It's nearly time to see if Beltre and Mauer get in. Personally, I see Beltre as first or second ballot and Mauer going anywhere from first to third or even fourth. I'll admit that I'm borderline incapable of judging Mauer objectively due to growing up watching him, but I'll make my case anyway. He's got appeal for old-school and new-school voters alike. He measures up to other Hall of Fame catchers in sabermetrics (7th highest JAWS among catchers, 5th in WAR for catchers in their first 10 seasons). In the old-school category, he has three batting titles when no AL catcher before him had one and brought home plenty of hardware. He also has the character boost of a squeaky-clean public image and played his whole career with one team— his hometown team. Baseball people love that sort of story. Yes, his postseason record is disappointing, a series of concussions forced him to move away From catching, and those concussions as well as other injuries made his last five seasons largely mediocre, but I think the reasons I've listed above outshine those negatives. My final prediction for his vote percentage in his first year is 50-80%— a massive span to be sure, but one that I think captures the wide range of opinions and analysis I've seen (plus a healthy dose of bias, of course). In my heart, it's Mauer Sweep 2024, but I'm not a BBWAA voter.
Cool analysis twinswin, I am 100% sold on Mauer. I admit I have a bias towards catchers, such a tough job.
I think you could add Robby Cano to the list, sure he has a PED suspension but Ortiz is in so it doesn't really matter.
Also maybe Longoria who has more WAR than Machado and Freeman.
Thanks BigUnit. I'll put Longoria on HM, Cano is on the Hall of Shamers list. |
