Sets in my Collection, vol. 3: NBAby Billy Kingsley - 105 cards (Last updated on Jan 10, 2022) |
31. 1989-90 Hoops #321 Matt Guokas
Complete! This set does not get the respect it deserves. At the time it was issued, it had several firsts. It was the first set to ever include coaches (Although Star made a coach-only set in 1984-85), it was the first NBA set to have 2 series, and at 353 cards, it was the largest NBA set at the time of release. It may have also been the first NBA set to issue corrections for errors, but I am not totally sure on that. I finally completed it in 2017. |
32. 1990-91 Fleer #73 Akeem Olajuwon
Complete! The 1990-91 Fleer set is not really all that memorable to me. I completed it over a decade ago, and don't really think about it all that much, to be honest. |
33. 1990-91 Hoops #36 Dominique Wilkins
Complete! One of my all-time favorite sets. I ranked it #4 when I did a countdown of my Top 20 favorite NBA sets when I celebrated my 20th Anniversary of being an NBA fan. (https://cardboardhistory.blogspot.com/2016/02/nba-20th-anniversary-countdown-4-1990.html)

34. 1990-91 SkyBox #104 Kelvin Upshaw
While 90-91 Hoops is a favorite, 90-91 Skybox is one of my LEAST favorites. It was the first time since 1972-73 that the photos were super imposed over some fake background, but that's all this was. The gold borders take damage easily- if you hold them too long, the heat from your hands will leave fingerprints melted into the gold, literally. The only good thing I can say about it is that it gives some of the more obscure players from the 1989-90 season their only card. I'm two away from completing it, but I need to upgrade quite a few more. |
35. 1990-91 Star James Worthy #1 James Worthy
For my purposes, the later issue Star sets are one large set. Unlike the earlier Star releases of the 1980s, these were not produced as one continuously numbered series, but tiny issues of single players. This represents the fact that I have the 1990-91 version represented in my collection, but not that I have every different player. |
36. 1991-92 Fleer #17 Tyrone Bogues
Complete! The first Fleer set to have two series, and the last to feature old school textured cardbacks (although bleached yellowish).
|
37. 1991-92 Hoops #140 Patrick Ewing
Complete! At 590 cards, this is the second largest set I've ever completed, in all subjects. This was the first set to include a Serially Numbered card...and as anyone who's ever read anything I've ever written knows, SN cards are an obsession of mine. |
38. 1991-92 SkyBox #653 David Wingate
Complete! At 659 cards, this is the largest NBA set ever. Unfortunately, it's typical early Skybox, so they weren't good...and some of the cards are pure filler. As card #653, Wingate is the highest numbered NBA player card ever made. 654-659 were all checklists. |
39. 1990-91 Star Dee Brown #10 Dee Brown
Like the 1990-91 Star caption above, this card also represents that I have Star cards from 1991-92, not that I have all of them. |
40. 1991-92 Upper Deck #154 Rolando Blackman
Complete! During 1990-91, three card companies applied for an NBA license- Action Packed, Pro Set and Upper Deck. Only UD was granted the license, and, perhaps coincidentally, perhaps not, UD is the only one still in business. (the Pro Set and Action Packed prototypes are some of my most wanted cards- I don't have any of either).
