Sets in my Collection, vol. 3: NBA

by Billy Kingsley - 105 cards (Last updated on Jan 10, 2022)

92. 1995-96 Jam Session #14 Steve Kerr

The last year Fleer did these oversize cards, thankfully. This was the smallest set at only 125 cards. I think they planned a Series 2 but never did it. Complete!

93. 1995-96 Metal #183 Aaron McKie

Metal only lasted 5 years but it was one of my favorite brands. If it had lasted longer it may have even challenged Ultra for favorite. but it didn't have the longevity. They don't scan well- but in hand, they are incredible! While I've completed 4 of the 7 sets-- there were two in 1997-98 and 1998-99- this first year is one I have not completed.

94. 1995-96 Panini Stickers #59 Gheorghe Muresan

For many years, I did not count the Panini stickers as part of my collection. I only officially began counting them as part of my collection proper in 2016. I now regret that because I know, I remember, walking past them in the store and ignoring them because they weren't "real cards"....now I regret that, because finding the old stickers is not easy by any means. The Panini stickers began in 1990-91, (maybe earlier) and my collection consists of some from this set, to none until 2013-14. Oof.

95. 1995-96 SkyBox Premium #202 Hersey Hawkins

The Skybox set from 1995-96 is one I have a lot of memories of, but in the season trails behind Fleer, Hoops, Metal, Ultra, Topps, Upper Deck, Collector's Choice and Stadium Club in terms of my personal favorites.

96. 1995-96 SP #29 Tony Dumas

SP was mirror foil on both sides. I don't really care much for it. And it scans terribly. But since it's from my first year I want to complete it anyway.

97. 1995-96 SP Championship #89 Rod Strickland

SP Championship's final appearance. Nobody seems to have missed it. I actually like it better than the SP flagship.

98. 1996 SPx #8 Michael Jordan

I don't care what anybody says, this IS a 1995-96 release. What's more, it's the first NBA set I remember being issued and the first NBA set I ever completed- I got it as my birthday present from my parents in October 1996. I still remember my shock- I had seen the set in the store and didn't think we would ever be able to afford it. Much to my surprise, my parents got it for me! I was at that store several times between when I saw it there for sale and when I got it- The card shop was in sight of my doctor, and I was at the doctor sometimes multiple times in a week, usually at least once every week, and every Doctor trip led to the card shop- I remember being disappointed that somebody had bought it and I couldn't, because it was gone. Little did I know.

99. 1995-96 Stadium Club #5 Horace Grant

I really like this Stadium Club set, it's probably my 3rd favorite set of the 1995-96 season in fact (after Fleer and Hoops in that order). It was when they really started to have the dynamic photos they would be known for later. My best memory of this set is opening a few packs in the Long John Silver's in Glens Falls, NY, while waiting for the food to cook, and then putting the pack on the windowsill of the store while we ate. (Nowadays, I would NEVER do that because I would not risk getting grease on the cards- but when I was 12, I didn't think about that so much). I have often wondered, wouldn't it be funny if Jimmer Fredette was in the restaurant at that time and remember that as well...it is his home town, so he MAY have been in there eating at the same time I was, although he would have been a really little kid at the time.

100. 1995-96 Topps #46 Buck Williams

This is kind of the forgotten Topps set and the forgotten 1995-96 set. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not as memorable to me as the Topps sets that came later- of course, as a 1995-96 release, I could never forget it.

101. 1995-96 Topps Gallery #77 Loy Vaught

I never liked Topps Gallery all that much because the cards were all curved very badly. In fact, in 1996, I tried to remove the curve from one of the inserts and bent it right in half. I finally replaced it on COMC a few years ago. I don't try to get the natural curves out of cards anymore.
