2023 Major League Debuts

by DarkSide830 - 261 cards (Last updated on Jan 8, 2024)

1. 2022 Topps Heritage Minor League #46 Jordan Walker

3/30 STL: 1-5, RBI

A consensus Top-4 prospect in the game for 2023, it's not hard to see why the 20 year-old Walker was able to force his way onto a talented Cardinals roster out of AA.

2. 2022 Bowman Chrome - Prospects #BCP-182 Anthony Volpe

3/30 NYY: 0-2, BB, SB

An unparalleled physical talent who could within reason join the 40/40 club in the future, Volpe was 27/33 in HR/SB in just 109 Minors games at age 19 in 2021, then stole 50 bases with another 21 home runs last year.

3. 2022 Topps Pro Debut #PD-153 Oscar Colas

3/30 CHW: 1-2

In spite of having not appeared in an affiliated game and barely any NPB games prior to the 2022 season, Colás raced to AAA during that campaign, looking electric along the way. He joins a White Sox outfield also featuring Eloy Jiménez and countryman Luis Robert Jr. - all three having forced their way onto an Opening Day roster without MLB experience.

4. 2023 Topps Now World Baseball Classic #WBC-65 Masataka Yoshida

3/30 BOS: 2-4, HBP, R, RBI

An NPB and WBC sensation, Yoshida got off to a strong start in his Red Sox career. A highlight was game three versus Baltimore, where he hit safely twice, walked, stole a base, and produced five runs as Boston prevailed 9-5 to win the series.

5. 2022 Topps Heritage Minor League #38 Brice Turang

3/30 MIL: 1-3

Turang wrecked havoc against the Cubs in the rubber match of Milwaukee's Opening Weekend series with them. The former 1st rounder went 2-3 with a double, walked twice, and produced three runs as the Brewers won 9-5.

7. 2022 Choice Hickory Crawdads #NNO Mason Englert

3/30 DET: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 1 ER, 0 K (GF)

8. 2023 Topps Update #US67 Carlos Vargas

3/30 ARI: .2 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 1 ER, 2 K

Front Placeholder

9. 2022 Choice Montgomery Biscuts #30 Brett Wisely

3/30 SF: defensive replacement

10. 2022 Choice Tulsa Drillers #28 Gus Varland

3/30 MIL: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 0 ER, 1 K

Varland held a 2.25 ERA through his first seven outings in the Majors.

So with the press releases about the 1/1 "MLB debut patches" (https://cardlines.com/topps-mlb-debut-patches/), I'm hoping that we're going to see every new major leaguer get a major league card from Topps/Fanatics--and, of course, not just the advertised 1/1.  I'm not one to make money from cards, so maybe I'm missing something, but I always thought that Topps was leaving money on the table by declining to make even a single card of many new players.

Now, if I'm reading it right, every player who makes an MLB debut will have a 1/1 patch card.  Can we reasonably assume that they'll expand this beyond 1/1?  No patch needed -- but at least the card!

Hopefully every player gets one, yes. Still, I believe a revival of Total would be great for this as well, and not the stupid high-end version we have now.
