2022 Major League Debuts

by DarkSide830 - 302 cards (Last updated on Nov 2, 2022)

1. 2021 Bowman - Prospects #BP-1 Bobby Witt Jr.

4/7 KC: 1-4, 2B, R, RBI

Son of a long-time Major League father by the same name, the younger Witt skipped every level of A-ball between his 2019 pro debut and starting out in AA in 2021. He started 2022 with the Royals, and his double in the 8th on Opening Day produced the game-winning run.

2. 2021 Topps NPB #80 Seiya Suzuki

4/7 CHC: 1-2, 2 BB, R

A decorated player who won accolades in the field and with the bat on a yearly basis in the NPB, Suzuki made a surprising decision and signed with the Cubs prior to the 2022 season. Debuting in the first game of the MLB season, Suzuki walked in the second as MLB's first debut of 2022. His .429/.564/.929 slash line though 10 games saw him take pole position in the NL Rookie of the Year race.

3. 2021 Topps Heritage Minor League #119 Jeremy Pena

4/7 HOU: 0-4

Filling the hole left by the departure of Carlos Correa, Jeremy was Houston's Opening Day shortstop. Following a rough debut, Peña was 3-5 in two of his next three contests, then recorded his third three-hit game in just his eighth start.

4. 2021 BBM Hanshin Tigers #T34 Robert Suarez

4/7 SD: 0.0 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 HBP, 1 WP, 2 ER, 0 K (L) (BS)

The NPB Central League saves leader each of the last two seasons and a NPB All-Star in 2021, Suárez became a favorite to close for the Padres as soon as he signed. His brother Albert previously pitched for the rival Giants. After a rough April, Robert pitched to a 1.98 over 14 outings thereafter before being lost to injury.

Front Placeholder

5. 2019 Grandstand Lynchburg Hillcats #NNO Steven Kwan

4/7 CLE: 1-2, 2 BB

Kwan parleyed a huge 2021 and an even more impressive 2022 Spring Training into not just an Opening Day roster berth, but an Opening Day start. An impressive eye at the plate, Kwan did not strike out until his 59th plate appearance of 2022 split between Spring Training and the Regular Season.

7. 2019 Bowman Platinum - Top Prospects #TOP-29 Jose Azocar

4/7 SD: pinch runner

Azocar, used a lot as a pinch runner early, hit safely in three of his first five games with an at bat.

8. 2017 Panini Elite Extra Edition #103 Diego Castillo

4/7 PIT: 0-3

Castillo was an injury replacement for Ke'Bryan Hayes in the first inning on Opening Day. Castillo later hit in his first four starts in the Majors, producing three alone in his first start against the Cardinals on April 10th.

9. 2021 Bowman Draft #BD-145 Julio Rodriguez

4/8 SEA: 0-4

An electrifying talent, Rodriguez has continued to improve with every stop he's made in the Minors. He skipped AAA to make Seattle's 2022 Opening Day roster at a fairly young 21, then converted his first nine stolen base attempts successfully to lead the Majors though April.

10. 2021 Bowman Platinum - Top Prospects #TOP-16 Bryson Stott

4/8 PHI: 2-4, 2B, R, RBI

Stott followed up a decent 2019 professional debut with a dominant effort across three levels in 2021, then made Philadelphia's Opening Day roster in spite of a lack of a regular starting spot for him to fill.

Great list as usual! Really helps me tracking prospects cards I don't have yet.

I think Brian Moran made his major league debut against the Rangers tonight for the Angels. Like I know he played obviously, but I think it was his first major league game

Nah, Moran debuted for Miami in 2019. He's still rookie eligible, but he debuted then.

Mungo Hungo

Felix Bautista has a card in the 2021 Norfolk Tides "Update" set.  Hasn't been added to TCDB yet.

I'll get that tomorrow. I use BBREF's debuts section, which updates some time the day after every slate of games.

I only have been commenting on the players who made the debut against or with Minnesota so anything else is up for grabs ;).
