BASEBALL'S BIG GUYS

by jdogg1228 - 239 cards (Last updated on Feb 27, 2024)

1. 2009 Topps - Gold #24 Frank Thomas

275 lbs.
Still having Big Hurt on the front.

2. 2013 Choice Binghamton Mets #27 Glenn Abbott

225 lbs? In his playing days, maybe.
As you can see from the photo, he's definitely gained a lot of weight as a pitching coach.

9. 2019 Topps Total #741 Matt Albers

Only 225! Nonsense! That scale must have been broken- but I'm not rude enough to say it was because he stepped on it.

You have one Orioles DH/1B, but could add another - Sam Horn. Here is listed at 250 - https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/200/cid/93215/1992-Score-290-Sam-Horn

Almost any David Wells between, say 1997 and 1999. Cards list him at 225 but I feel like he was more than that, especially when he was battling gout.

I feel like Billy "country breakfast" Butler was a pretty big guy, too. Maybe around 250 if I'm not mistaken

thanks doogie_13 and grim25doogie_13, I was able to find cards of David Wells in his later years, (2007-2008) in which he was listed at 250 lbs. Billy Butler has been added as well. grim25, Rick Reuschel does qualify; he has been added.

2 more. Matt Capps and even though they don't put weight on his cards The Babe must apply. Imagine the amount of cards on this list if it applied to football. The weight limit you would have to make would be 300 pounds!

I actually added Rizzo before I looked at your comment, so if it is alright with you, it won't say "Submitted by: CollectingAfterDeath."

Great suggestions, I totally forgot about Gallo and Dunn.

I won't do your honorable mentions because I've lost track of the times I've looked on the back of a baseball cards and it said "235 lbs." As much as I'd like to add Trout, I don't really want to go back and find all the 235 people.

Understandable to have a cut-off.  Wasn't sure at the time that it was 240.  Thank you for letting me participate.

Got another one for your list:

Mitch Moreland - 245

https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/239033/cid/16233689/2021-Topps-Heritage-58-Mitch-Moreland

Yeah I'm hoping everyone agrees that Hammerin' Hank is the real home run king. He is a perfect example. He may be a skinny boy, but what you learn from that is you don't need steroids to be one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Great suggestion!

One problem...

Having trouble choosing one of these two cards:

The one you suggested is cool, as the "Big Show" would be a fitting show to be on if you make my list

And then there's THIS CARD where he looks huge.

Which one is best?

Dec 24, 2021 - 8:08PM

The big show card because there is no weight shown unlike yours where it says 215. He was definitely bigger after retirement and your card is him as a player. Just my reasoning.

I just saw an article that John Kruk was pretty big at the end of his career and as the coach of the Phillies MiLB teams..  This card kinda shows it, but I dont know an exact manager weight, but the card says 175. (That was his weight when he was with the Padres, I think.)

Oh if only we all had baseball card backs and media guides to generously underestimate our true size. Closest I've got is my driver's license. The guys on this list range from "tall guys with weights proportional to their height", to "regular height guys with just a bit more bulk", to "if you saw him walking down the street you would not believe he was a professional athlete". Good stuff.

A suggestion for your set: Adalberto Meija. The card I have (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/155909/cid/11364591/2018-Topps-494-Adalberto-Mejia) lists him as 195lb, but he clearly must've put on a few pounds by the end of his career because Baseball Reference lists him as 265lb (https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/mejiaad01.shtml). I did some sleuthing and his 2019 Topps card (https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/182808/cid/13160971/2019-Topps-383-Adalberto-Mejia) still lists him as 195lb, so Baseball Reference must know something that I don't. I don't know your stance on non-baseball card sources for weights, but it's Baseball Reference so they must have some legitimate source for that number.
