With the Database now supporting the team feature in NASCAR sets, here is a breakdown on the Petty team:
Richard Petty Motorsports is the current team, and was founded in 2009. It is the result of a merger between Petty Enterprises, Gilette-Evernham Motorsports and, after 2009, Robert Yates Racing. Cards of Richard Petty as a Driver should NOT be tagged to this team.
Petty Enterprises was founded in 1949 by Lee Petty and was the name of the family buisness until the end of 2008. All Petty's driver cards- including those in Press Pass Legends and now 2016 Panini Prizm, and his owner cards until 2008 should be tagged to Petty Enterprises. The team was originally founded as Lee Petty Engineering but I am still working on researching when the name was formally switched. It was after 1964, possibly when Lee retired at the conclusion of that season. However, there is a caveat, as Petty left and drove for Curb Racing in 1984 and 1985. There are cards documenting the two years (especially as his 200th win came during them) and should be tagged to Curb Racing. Petty Enterprises was in operation those two years, with other drivers, but the only cards documenting the other drivers is in the 1992 Pro Set Petty Family release.
Eventualy, there will have to be team PIDs created for Petty Enterprises, Robert Yates Racing, Evernham Motorsports, Curb Racing and Gilette-Evernham Motorsports, but I will leave it up to Admin if Petty Enterprises and Petty Engineering should be broken out.
And in case you are wondering, the Gilette in Gilette-Evernham Motorsports is indeed the George Gilette who owned the Montreal Canadiens and Liverpool soccer teams.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards. Holy cow. This is worse than the California Angels!!

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Sorry Billy. I'm partially at fault on that. I've only worked on 2015 and 2016 cards with adding teams. You see that I left the rest of the HOF cards in the 2016 set alone. I didn't know how those should be listed, if at all. They are mostly wearing suits and no mention of a team on the back, plus they all drove for more than one team in the career. While I was working on them, I did have several more teams added to the list of TID's, but I thought how nice it would be to link all of one driver's cards to one team all at once. It can't be done for most drivers, but it would be helpful with some. Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon spent their entire Cup careers with HMS and with several thousand cards for each one, that would take out a chunk all at once. Changing the teams for their cards before the Cup Series would be easy if it's needed.
I have a question for you that I know you can answer. I haven't looked it up yet, but what happened to EGR? Now it's just Chip Ganassi Racing. Where did the Earnhardt name go? Did Teresa bail on the joint venture and clear out of NASCAR?

On a related topic, for anyone uploading Racing checklists using the Excel method, note that your spreadsheet now must have a column for the "Team" in between the "Name" and "Note1" columns. Whether it is poulated or not, it needs to be there, or any notes you have will show up as the teams.

Yes Billy, I was just pointing out that the exact form of a checklist that has been "done right" is now different than it was last week.

That would have been me then. I tagged all of the base cards (minus HOF's) and many of the parallels. Somehow, I had no idea that EGR didn't exist anymore. However, the team is still not in the list. I don't know how it should be added though b/c of the Felix Sabates link to Ganassi as well. I don't know how long that lasted, if it's still going on, OR if it's even worth mentioning Sabates. I was just working on 2010 WME b/c I got a Jeff Gordon SP in and added the scans tonight. I am not adding anything as a team for JMac right now b/c there is no Earnhardt-Ganassi Racing team listed and I don't want to add one if anyone thinks Sabates should be part of the title too. Seems to long of a name to me, but that was the official team name (Earnhardt-Ganassi with Felix Sabates Racing), right? I don't know what to do with that conglomeration, so I'll leave that up to you guys with much more knowledge than I have about it. I'll only add teams I am completely sure about to CL's.
