So ...................... been at this battle for a few years now but obviously the first time here, I do believe the industry has it wrong and here is why; I can show you more versions that get listed on sites. I understand the Beckett / OPC arguements but when they are in hand you know there are differences. For me I think the versions are :
Base, Retro, Retro Blank Back, Retro Rainbow, Gold (dont have any, I think, but they are listed everywhere), Metal, "Metal Rainbow" and Metal X. As far as I am concerned there are three distinct metal versions not two. I have standard super shiney ones, super shiny ones that obviously reflect rainbow effects and the shiny metal ones with the "tire tracks" or "X" marks all over them. But there is nobody willing to confirm this with me. All the info I have ever found disagrees with my assessment. But I have many of each version and feel you can not deny it.
Looking at the set here, the "Gold" version tends to scan a blue hue, the standard "Metal" version does not as they tend to skew to the darker grey shade when scanned. Then there is "Metal X", on this site the ONLY scans that are correct IMO are 561, 581, 583 and 752 as those four have the distinct pattern "in" the chrome effect. Now card 95 on the other hand is the ONLY scan I can find that shows the "Metal Rainbow" effect that I say exists and can not prove. I have opened three hobby of the regular 08-09 and 2 of the update plus a few blasters and all have had the same thing come about. Several versions to say the least. Anybody else agree and feel I am on to something or can you also agree with me via proof in your collection? The only other possibility is the rainbow effect is the Gold version and I'm just an idiot. =)

I concur with your opinion. I have no cards from this set, but I trust your judgment.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

I'd trust your first hand knowledge and experience far more than I'd trust somebody at Beckett who was handed a list and told to "type this" into a database.

It's hard for me to say what the exact difference with all of them is because I have yet to SEE all of them in-hand. I have only seen the Gold and Metal versions, and even then I'm still not 100% as to the rest. What you're describing logically sounds accurate, and I'll probably be using this thread in the future to make those determinations! lol

my 2cents for what its worth as I got this from other sources, but have multiple of each in hand as well to compare.
EASY to identify:
Retro is the 1979-80 version
Retro Parallel are Sn# to 100
Retro Blank back are clearly blank backed :)
HARD to identify
From what I can tell Rainbow/Gold is the same thing
2008-09 O-Pee-Chee Gold Parallel (Shines rainbow colours, but the O-Pee-Chee lettering is plain white with no rainbow reflection around the black lettering.)
2008-09 O-Pee-Chee Metal Parallel
(It’s the only parallel that doesn’t shine rainbow. Turn it from side to side, if it doesn’t shine rainbow colours and only reflects silver then you’ve got yourself a Metal.)
2008-09 O-Pee-Chee Metal X Parallel
Shines rainbow colours as does the O-Pee-Chee lettering (the white part around the black lettering to be exact). Some have a textured mountain like background too

So my last sentence sounds to me like the one that is most likely, that Gold = Metal Rainbow (stupid to call it gold OPC) and the Metal X cards may have the "tracks" or "mountains" and may not. So with my last update box I just opened I would have gotten some of each. Also with what you stated above there may be one more descriptive addition to the gold version. Read below.
I got : 42 metal, 3 metal x with "tracks", 3 metal x without "tracks" and one Gold. Its a Marquee Rookie and looks like it is even different paper stock than the metal ones as it is rough looking foil and not smooth. The OPC logo is also in white like you state. I will re-eval all my 08-09 this weekend and make another post. Thanks to everyone who helped me out, I may be the idiot I stated I was ..... maybe not!! =D
