2008 Upper Deck First Edition Baseball Forum

The non glossy was always the first edition.  The factory set and regular packs of first edition were the exact same cards. I actually didn't realize I put Edmunds in the factory set one. Sorry 

According to earlier posts, there is a glossy version of the First Edition cards for #'s 1-300. Any First Edition cards are marked by UD on the front and/or the back as First Edition or First Edition Update. I just want some clarity on this.

You make a good point about the last 200 cards being the same in the factory set and the normal set.  However, I don't know what a good solution would be because it seems like there is always going to be some overlaps in the listings. 

Maybe the final 200 cards need their own listing? So you'd have 2008 UD 1st Ed (with non-glossy paralell) and then a listing for 2008 UD 1st Ed Update.  That way, you wouldn't have to worry about the non-glossy update cards showing up in two places.

Can anyone tell me if there is any difference between these two cards?

I'm seeing this thread a little after the fact as I just opened a factory set and moved all my existing cards to extras.  But I do notice that the factory set is 100% UNglossy, and the cards that I had previously were glossy #1-#279 and UNglossy #301-#500.  I had no cards #280-#300 so I cannot vouch for them, but I am going to assume they were also released as glossy in the "Base Set".  I note that comment exists for the Base Set in our database (not sure when it was added).

Two addditional observations regarding "Base Set" and "Factory Set".  #1-#300 have "2008 UPPER DECK BASEBALL FIRST EDITION" on the back, while #301-500" have "2008 FIRST EDITION UPDATE BASEBALL".  And this is true for all of the cards I have, whether glossy or not.

So wouldn't the "Factory Set" be #1-#500 matte finish and the "Base Set" be #1-#300 glossy finish?  If there was an "Update" release available separately somehow (rack packs or hobby set or something), then wouldn't that be a separate "Update" set or something (like Score Rookie & Traded, or Topps Traded, etc.)?

Correction to my last post:  I said that someone added the comment to the base set that #1-#300 were glossy.  I'm sorry, but I don't see that anywhere now.  I would have sworn it was there, but I don't see it.  Maybe it should be added?  It made sense to me when I thought I saw it there. (?)  What do the experts think?

Unsure if this should be a new forum entry or a continuation of this thread.  Sorry.

I'm back to looking at these UD cards after looking at some of the late 80s Donruss.  I'm now thinking the 2008 UD 1st Edition should just have one entry in TCDB, with cards 1-300 having a glossy "wax box" variant (or other term). I think that would be consistent with how the Donruss backgrounds were treated, and it would eliminate the duplication of cards 301-500 which are currently listed in both UD 1st Ed and UD 1st Ed Factory Set.

What are the thoughts of the masses, especially the gurus that so many of us look up to respectfully (and with more than a little envy)?

I can agree with that. I'd like to see the same thing happen with Hobby vs. Retail for sets like Fleer Ultra, Absolute Memorabilia, Rookies & Stars and other sets where the only difference b/t the 2 was glossy/non-glossy or foil/no foil and also the products with extra thick/normal thickness.
