1970 Topps Baseball Forum

Looking through both prominent price guides, the difference between each of these scratch-off insert sets is described to be either white centers or red centers.  I'm guessing that means the color filling on the phrase Topps Scratch-offs.  The issue I see is that by this definition, the display card for the 1970 Topps Scratch-offs set is actually a 1971 Topps Scratch-offs Hank Aaron.  I also see that sellers on some of the prominent auction sites are also getting this wrong as well. 

Am I interpreting the difference wrong? 

You seem to have it right 1970 had the white "background" on the inside and 1971 has the red. Unless they have tell-tale signs on the outside front or back I don't know how you can tell the display card is '71 instead of '70? The fronts/backs seem to be the same from what I've seen. I think all the ones I have are 1970s eek haven't really thought about that as I have been trying to build these insert sets.

As to sellers knowing the difference they will always confuse them.

But, you've got it wrong. It's the color of the background of the scratch-off side of the card. Those front and back images in our database are actually only one side of the card. The scratch off side is not shown. I've asked Admin to fix it but they haven't.

And you are correct, 99% of ebay sellers don't know the difference. And if they don't have a scan of the scratch-off side I always have to ask them to provide it.

And captkirk is correct. There is no difference between the 1970 and 1971 front images. Only the inside (backs) are different.

I just completed my 1970 Topps Scratchoff insert set today with the winning bid on a Dick Bosman, which I overpaid just a little for.  Interesting name, actually.  Perhaps, Dick Boss Man would have been more popular for his career.  Anyways.  My only requirement for completing this set was hat both halves of the card were still attached at the perforations, so many of the cards in my set have been scratched.  With both the Scratchoff and Booklet insert sets completed, all that I'm missing is a Johnny Bench Poster insert to complete the 3 major insert sets for 1970 Topps.  The 1971 Topps Scratchoff insert set, which seems to be more rare than the 1970 version, is next up on my agenda too.
