I discussed this finding with Steven Green from STB and 4 or 5 sellers on Ebay who had the set to offer. Apparently it's know that 10,000 sets were printed. One seller on eBay states that he purchased the whole run for the year directly from Grand Slam, and his set did NOT have the MLB logo. Steven has both variations and confirmed that some of his came from directly from Grand Slam. Everyone seems to agree that the sets WITH MLB logos were distributed to all of the MidWest League ball parks, probably filling the original agreement. And additional sets were made to fill orders placed directly through Grand Slam to individuals.
Seems to make more sense than my original thoughts. Hard to know for sure, I wish I could figure out who the actual producers of Grand Slam cards was. I wonder if they had similar agreements to how TCMA used to do business. They would print the agreed upon quantity to fill the order, but retain the rights to print more however the seen fit, perhaps to fill catalog orders.
But of all the listings I looked at for this set on STB, EBay, COMC, SportLots and various other places on the web, the variation without the MLB logo appears much harder to find.
