Hi! I have a sample card from this set, and was trying to determine the best way to enter it into the DB.
The card is a sample copy that was given to the player. My card is the same as the Brooks Robinson card in the "Real One Autographs" inserts, but was originally unsigned and reads "Player Sample" above the photo where the certified autograph message would normally appear. Mr. Robinson was kind enough to sign this copy and include it in a request I'd sent him.
I'd imagine that this is something that Topps does regularly, providing players with samples when they send out cards for them to sign. I've heard of them before but hadn't seen one until I received this.
So, thoughts on how to enter something like this into the checklist?

A couple thoughts...
1) It could be put in as an individual sample/promo card
2) We could create an insert or promo set and add them as found like the Buyback checklists
3) Yours is signed, so it goes against TCDB guidelines to upload it to the main database, but you can detail add it in so it shows in your collection only or...
In some rare cases with cards this rare ADMIN will allow your signed card to represent it in the database.
Others thoughts?

I received a 2013 signed one from Amado Samuel after a TTM request a couple years ago. Gave it to a Mets fan

Do they exist without signatures? Like, how do we know that Robinson didn't sign them all immediately and give to his agent to mail out with requests? I mean, all autographed cards are "originally unsigned" aren't they?
I would probably enter a "sample copy" insert set and enter the one you have, plus any others you can verify online, as the checklist (I know this will get shot down, which is fine). This seems like a set where the full checklist may never be proven. I would think your scan would be acceptable, but I would run that by Admin first, like rmpaq said.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff. Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Ok there is two know so far...So I would suggest, from my previous suggestions, creating an insert set called Player Samples and adding to the checklist as they are discovered (and adding a release note that explains what they are and add as you go). Also I see switzr1 agrees with this so it must be a damn fine idea.
And yes ask ADMIN about adding your scan (if this is the way that we go) to the main database. The backs are different yes, so for sure that can be added to the main database without question.

I don’t believe the backs are different. The “Player Sample” was printed on the front of the card (as it sounds like the Robinson was as well) in small print and seems to be the only difference from the pack released card.
Cards like this are difficult for me to consider “altered” when signed. Seems like the intent was for them to be signed, so it’s almost like they are more accurately “complete” when signed. Similar to a lot of team issue cards that were specifically given out at events for the sole purpose of being signed. It’s harder to find an unsigned copy of some than the leftovers that didn’t get signed. I just added nothing helpful.

Never thought I would hear those words!
*referring to what rmpaq said, suggesting something I said was a good idea!!

Before adding anything, I'd run this past Admin. These are items that don't really fall under any of the other umbrellas that follow the usual paths.
I would argue for their inclusion, as it seems the card companies send them to the players with the intention that they'll be autographed and given to fans. However, Admin and I don't agree on everything here, and I'd hate to see people go through a bunch of work getting these sets (or individual cards) set up, images added, and collection info entered only to have them removed once seen by Admin.
These cards sound VERY cool.

I should remove my comments. They will probably hurt the cause.
