I recently acquired a couple of these and would like to know what the consensus would be for scanning them:
1. In their standup cases or remove the cards?
2. If in the cases, the scan wouldn't look right as it would be at an angle, so would these qualify for photos instead (which I know are generally forbidden here)?
3. Which side should be considered the front? The '89 Topps side or their RC reprint?
There's not much consistency in the few we have so far.

The few we have so far look like crap. Are the cases hermetically sealed? Is that why nobody wants to remove them for scanning?

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

I have 2 of them...one is in the little stand and the other isn't. The one in the stand never had , for a better word, a back on the case. The little paper card actually can come out.
The reason the scans look like crap is because the cards look like crap.
I really don't like calling it a card because it really is nothing more then a piece of paper with the image of 2 cards on it. Magazine pages are better quality of paper in my opinion.

Chuck, I'm not sure if they're supposed to stay sealed but the couple I have pop open fairly easily. I think it comes down to the question of whether or not the case is part of the card or just packaging, like when you get uncirculated cards in packs.

The cases do seem to break easily, so that makes sense. And you're right about the quality of the paper, though I don't think they'd scan any worse than the Topps Mini cards from 1991-93 when they're out of the case.

Even when you get uncirculated cards in packs in slabs, that's NOT part of the card. The card is the card. Not the sleeve, not the top-loader, not the screw down, not the slab, not the wrapper, not the... anything.
Uploading images of cards in slabs is like uploading images of cards still in the wrappers. Should we use this:
Instead of this:
Why? Because it's not part of the card.

Thanks, Dan. This is one of those items where I can easily remove the card from the case so I don't mind doing so. I just don't like doing that for uncirculated cards where the sticker hasn't been removed, or ones that come in slabs out of packs, so I leave those for others to do. I'll take care of scans for the ones I have by removing them from the cases, and unless anyone has any objections I'll make the '89 Topps side the "front". I can also go through and mark the bad images as needing replacement.

Cases, slabs, toploaders, penny sleeves, etc are not part of the cards. Just another form of packaging.
