This time around, Wild Card has actually released checklists for their Retail and Hobby products, which should make our life easier!
One thing though, base checklist for Retail is Black or White, and for Hobby it's Gold or Silver.
Which of these 4 should be considered the base checklist, and not a parallel?

Last year for some reason the Black and White sets were divided into two different distinct sets even though they're the same release, so let's not do that this year too.
I'm building myself a little spreadsheet right now with all the inserts and parallels from the official checklist, too. There's gonna be about a million inserts/parallels in there, but eventually I'll go through them.
Also, I'm thinking that Gold should be the base checklist. Usually the Hobby version is considered the "true" product.

There was just some side discussion yesterday about last year's WC set(s). The question I have - was it only the base set that was different in the boxes, or was it the entire product run?

All of the base/parallel sets and inserts match the color of the box. The chase packs also match the color.
White has Blue chase packs
Black has Red chase packs
Gold has Purple chase packs
Silver has Green chase packs
Besides the colors and different SN for retail and hobby, they're all the exact same product. Wild Card doesn't consider them different products either.

They (of course) also have a few exclusive colors exclusively made for convention packs, but those are another story.

"All of the base/parallel sets and inserts match the color of the box. The chase packs also match the color."
Unfortunately, this is the definition of "different products". Were the mixed boxes distributed in cases together (as in was it set up that a case has 1 of each box)? Or were the cases all white, all black, etc?

The cases are mixed. You get black + white boxes in retail cases, and gold + silver boxes in hobby cases.
So are we considering a product with the same exact design, players, parallels, numbering, release date, etc to be different products because the company has decided to release them in different background colors?

People have already started listing all of them under the same set. I really think it should all be considered the same set, but if you want to divide them into 4 different sets it's a possibility, but we'd need to act fast before people just start entering their collection in the wrong places.
I'm also almost done sorting everything out in my spreadsheet, so as soon as we've come to a conclusion about where what should be listed, I'll start creating properly named insert/parallel sets.
This year we have the chance to be able to figure it out early before it turns into the monster that was the 2021 release where there's tons of overlap and errors between 2021 Wild Card Matte and 2021 Wild Card Matte White.

We consider a product a product if it's released together. Topps Chrome looks exactly like Topps, but because the cards are in separate cases/boxes/packs, they are a different release.
